NZ: 88-year-old agent has no plans to retire
👓 1 minute read
At 88, FN Roper & Jones (Maungaturoto) salesperson Gary Morris is one of New Zealand's oldest active real estate agents, and says he'll keep working 'as long as I'm standing'. More than 50 years after entering the industry in 1971, he has already sold around NZ$5 million worth of property this year.
Morris began his career after being recruited from selling Electrolux vacuum cleaners door-to-door, where his local knowledge and sales ability caught the attention of a real estate firm. Despite initially working only five days a week because of religious commitments, he built a successful career that has now spanned more than five decades.
Reflecting on the industry's evolution, he says technology has dramatically accelerated transactions, but believes the fundamentals remain unchanged. His advice to younger agents is to prioritise genuine personal contact with clients rather than becoming buried in administration. Building relationships, picking up the phone and maintaining trust, he says, are still the keys to long-term success.
Morris also credits repeat business as one of the greatest rewards of a long career, recalling clients who returned to him half a century after their first purchase to sell the same property. His story is a reminder that while the tools of real estate continue to change, reputation, service and human connection remain timeless qualities.
