YEAR TWO
Grade Bulletin - Term Two, 2026

The Easter Season:
Students will learn about the events of Holy Week and discover how Jesus showed us how to love God and love one another through these events. Students will learn that at Easter, we celebrate sharing in the new life of Jesus Christ.
Sharing in the Life of the Church:
Students will learn about the Church’s liturgical year, relating the key seasons and symbols to the events of Jesus’ life, death, Resurrection and ascension. Important symbols of the Church are explored as signs of God’s love in the life of the Church. Scripture and the Eucharist are also explored to establish how God is with us as we share in the life of the Church. Students then identify how they can be Pentecost people, filled with the Holy Spirit, making God’s love known to others.
Bible Images of God:
This unit introduces and explores Biblical images of God that help us know and discover God. Students will become familiar with the different images of God in the Old Testament through the Psalms and the prophets. They will also explore the image of God as a loving Father through the. Gospels. The unit also explores the Genesis account of creation with an emphasis on every person being made in God’s image and likeness. Students will reflect on the importance of spending time with our loving God in prayer.
This Term, Year 2 students will be exploring the structure and language features of narratives and information reports. They will explore the texts; Mallee Sky by Jodi Toering and Tannya Harricks, Scaly-tailed Possum and Echidna by Cathy Goonack, Nian the Chinese New Year Dragon by Virginia Loh-Hagan and Timothy Banks during Weeks 1-5. Then texts; Great White Shark by Claire Saxby, The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name by Sandhya Parappukkarab and Hark, It’s Me, Ruby Lee! by Lisa Shanahan and Binny during Weeks 6-11.
Through these texts the students will be taught explicit skills in relation to narrative and informative texts and will continue to learn about the importance of imagery, symbol & connotation, representation, context and character.
The children will complete the Decodables spelling program and move to the Soundwaves spelling program. They will complete weekly activities which include brainstorming, segmenting sounds, dictionary meanings, alphabetical order, spelling rules and rhyming activities.
You can assist your child by:
Listening to them read nightly and asking them to retell what they have read in their own words. This is essential for comprehension. Also asking some literal and inferential questions about the text to ensure they have understood what they have read.
Checking their spelling words during homework and visiting Soundwaves online to reinforce spelling strategies and phonemes.
The students will be explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus with a focus on problem solving, communication, reasoning and understanding. All activities are differentiated in order to cater to all student needs and ability.

Through activities such as soccer, netball, and hockey, students will develop spatial awareness, cooperation, and problem-solving skills in dynamic team settings. The unit encourages physical activity, resilience, and enjoyment, fostering lifelong participation in sport and movement. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to engage in skill development with the De La Salle PASS students. These sessions will run weekly every Tuesday commencing in Week 3.

The Year 2 Unit explores the idea of “Families” within the arts. In essence it is looking at groupings and how different elements of the arts are classified. This might be through genres in Dance, different human characteristics in Drama and different families of instruments in Music and Visual Arts.
It is recommended that Year 2 students spend up to a duration of 20-30 minutes of homework per day. This includes 10 minutes of reading every night. Homework consists of daily reading, spelling and Mathematics activities. These activities are to be completed weekly. Homework is due each Thursday and will be sent home every Friday.
Please record and sign your child’s daily reading on the appropriate page in their reading log/diary. It is very important that your child is reading aloud each night to ensure they are fluent, expressive and self monitoring. Asking comprehension questions at the end is also essential.
