YEAR ONE
Grade Bulletin - Term Two, 2026

Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School provides a range of holistic learning experiences to enable students to:
In Religious Education, students will engage in the topics of Easter and Baptism.
DLY1 - The Liturgical Year (EASTER)
The Unit ‘The Easter Season’ develops the students’ familiarity with the Easter story. It also introduces the stories of the Ascension and Pentecost. Through these stories, children continue to engage with the mystery of God’s abiding presence and realise that the Easter Season is a time to celebrate Jesus with us.
B1 - Baptised into the Church Community
This unit presents Mark’s account of ‘Jesus and the Children’ (Mark 10:13-16).. Through this story children can experience Jesus as one who welcomes, loves and includes them. In this story children are valued. They are people who enjoy a relationship with Jesus as part of God’s family.
The unit introduces Baptism as the sacrament, whereby we are initiated and welcomed into the Church community. The unit presents the key symbols and rituals used in the Rite of Baptism.
DL 1 - Celebrating Mass
This unit explores how Catholics gather at Sunday Mass to be nourished by Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Students are introduced to the key moments of the Mass within the Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist and the Concluding Rites. Students deepen their understanding of how we are sent out to live after celebrating the Mass by identifying how we can live like Jesus.
Creating Written Texts - The students will experience opportunities to engage with various quality texts throughout the term, including ‘Mr Huff’, ‘My Many Coloured Days’, ‘Florette’, ‘Eric Carle’s book of amazing animals’ and digital texts derived from ‘National Geographic Kids.’ Students will use these texts to explore the textual concepts of Imagery, Symbol, Connotation, Representation, Narrative and Character.
Reading - The students will continue to read decodable texts with automaticity, focusing on self-correcting errors and retrieving words automatically or by sounding out the word in their head instead of blending out loud.
Phonics and Spelling - Students are engaging with phonics and spelling on a daily basis. Students are explicitly taught different letter/sound correspondences starting by identifying and recording letter/sound correspondences followed by reading and spelling words, reading and writing sentences and reading decodable texts.
Handwriting - The students will continue to work on their pencil grip, correct letter formation and writing within the lines.
In Mathematics, students will be grouped within their own classes according to their needs and ability. All classes will be working through the early part of the Stage One outcomes. Mathematics lessons occur daily for 60 minutes. The topics taught this term are:
2D Spatial Structure - Area (Weeks 1-2)
Representing Whole Number (Weeks 3-4)
3D and 2D Spatial Structure (Weeks 5-6)
Representing Whole Number (Week 7)
Forming Groups(Weeks 8-9)
Data (Week 10).
During Term 2, students will be studying the unit 'Fantastic Forces’. In this unit, students will identify light, sound and heat energy while exploring how they are sensed and produced. The unit begins with students investigating how their senses help them interpret and interact with the world. Through hands-on, sensory-based investigations, they learn to observe and describe their surroundings using sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. Students explore sources of light and sound, as well as the effects of heat, through collaborative activities and investigations. Throughout the unit, they are encouraged and supported to observe, predict and communicate their findings, demonstrating their ability to work scientifically.
This term, we are continuing to learn about ‘Features of Places’. The students will identify and describe the different weather that occurs and how this affects everyday life. Students explore activities occurring in places and how spaces within these places can be used for different purposes.
This sports unit focuses on developing fundamental movement skills through athletics and invasion games. Students will refine their abilities in running, jumping, and throwing while building coordination and teamwork. Through activities such as soccer, netball, and hockey, students will develop spatial awareness, cooperation, and problem-solving skills in dynamic team settings. The unit encourages physical activity, resilience, and enjoyment, fostering lifelong participation in sport and movement. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to engage in skill development with the De La Salle PASS students. These sessions will run weekly commencing in Week 3.
This term, students will create artworks that express ideas about their world in realistic, imaginative, or expressive ways. They will explore spatial arrangements by experimenting with weaving techniques and constructing bird nests using recycled materials to communicate meaning through form and texture. Throughout these activities, students will demonstrate safe and responsible artmaking practices. They will also describe how artists represent subject matter and ideas through realistic, imaginative, or expressive approaches.
Homework will continue for students in Week One. The focus will be on daily reading, sentence writing and revision of Tricky Words. Parents are requested to sign their child’s Reading Log and return it each Thursday. A reminder that homework books will be sent home on Fridays and are to be returned the following Thursday for marking. Students will continue completing their nightly Maths Mentals tasks to reinforce key concepts and further develop their number fluency.
