Updated Instructional Models at CGPS

At Carlton Gardens Primary School, we are always working to improve learning outcomes for every student. This year, we have introduced new whole-school Instructional Models for both Literacy and Numeracy.

These models provide a consistent structure for lessons across all year levels, ensuring students receive clear teaching, time to practise, and targeted support.

In Literacy lessons, students will engage in explicit teaching of key reading and writing skills, followed by guided and independent practice. Teachers will also meet with students in small focus groups or conferences to provide feedback and support. Each lesson includes a “Catch and Connect” moment to revisit learning, clarify misconceptions, and make connections across the literacy block, as well as time for students to share and reflect on their progress. In Foundation to Year 2, there is an additional focus on systematic phonics to build strong early reading foundations.

In Numeracy lessons, students will participate in a structured learning cycle that includes warm-ups to build fluency, explicit teaching of new concepts, independent practice, and targeted teacher support in small groups. Lessons also include opportunities for catch-up check-ins and reflection, helping students consolidate their understanding and explain their mathematical thinking.

These instructional models help ensure consistent teaching across classrooms, clear learning expectations, and strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy for every child.
