Mathematics at Westbreen – Building Confident Mathematicians in 2026

Dear Families,

As we begin a new school year, I’m excited to share how mathematics learning at Westbreen Primary School supports every child to become a confident, capable, and curious mathematician.

Mathematics at Westbreen

Our mathematics teaching aligns with the Department’s principles that:

  • Numeracy is a fundamental life skill for all students
  • Learning mathematics develops problem solving, reasoning, and decision-making
  • High-quality mathematics education prepares students for full participation in society

At Westbreen, we use the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) and Mathematics 2.0 to create inclusive, engaging, and conceptually rich learning experiences that reflect these principles.

Developing Mathematical Proficiencies

Students are supported to develop the four mathematical proficiencies highlighted by the Department:

  • Understanding – grasping mathematical concepts deeply
  • Fluency – applying skills efficiently and accurately
  • Problem Solving – tackling unfamiliar challenges in meaningful contexts
  • Reasoning – explaining, connecting, and justifying solutions

These proficiencies are embedded in daily lessons to ensure students are equipped with knowledge, confidence, and critical thinking skills.

How You Can Support Mathematics at Home

Families can foster mathematical confidence by:

  • Talking about numbers and problem-solving in everyday activities (cooking, shopping, games)
  • Encouraging children to explain their thinking and strategies
  • Praising effort, persistence, and creative problem solving
  • Supporting a mindset that mistakes are part of learning, reinforcing growth and resilience

By working together, families and teachers can ensure all students at Westbreen develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in mathematics.

Kind regards,

Olivia Villani
