Students explore marine biology with Working on Water
Two of our Year 9 students, Molly Brain and Michaela Pieterse, recently gained exciting hands-on experience in marine biology through Seafood Industry Tasmania's Working on Water (WoW) program.
Joining peers from across the state, these budding marine scientists took their learning beyond the classroom and onto Hobart's waterways.
During the program, Molly and Michaela collected water samples to analyse phytoplankton under high-powered microscopes, examined southern calamari eggs and investigated fish ear bones (otoliths) to understand marine age and growth patterns.
It was an invaluable experience that deepened their understanding of marine ecosystems and the vital role different species play in maintaining them.
For Michaela, the hands-on nature of the day was a highlight:
"I really enjoyed the WoW program and found it super interesting and helpful to see what kind of jobs or work experience I can do on the water. I applied because I love the ocean and always have. I knew I wanted to be a marine biologist, but now that I know there are so many other options, I would love to explore more work experience opportunities. Thank you for this opportunity – I loved it!"
Big Splash 2026
The Clarence Aquatic Centre was a riot of colour and high-energy fun last Wednesday as rubber chickens and giant inflatable sea creatures took over for our annual Big Splash!
Decked out in House colours, our Senior School students fully embraced the spirit of the day with a series of novelty races across both pools.
From cone head polo and duck dive relays to 'rob the nest' and chicken games, students dodged stray water squirters and flying dodgeballs while rallying together to cheer on their Houses and their peers.
Congratulations to Nagle House for cleaning up the competition!
A huge thank you to our HPE department, House Leaders, Pastoral Care and Lantern teams, House Prefects and staff behind the scenes. Events like this run so smoothly because of your dedication to creating an environment where every student feels supported to jump in and have a go.
Certificate II Tourism: Final waterfront excursion
On Tuesday 20 October, our Certificate II in Tourism students took to the Hobart Waterfront for their final excursion of the year, viewing the city through the eyes of a visitor.
The class analysed tourist signage, explored the historical Convict Women statues at MACq 01 Hotel and enjoyed a mini tour of Hunter Street's rich history.
After a quick stop at busy Mures for a treat, the group headed to Brooke Street Pier. Although the 'Tasmanian Made' shop was closed, it provided a valuable practical lesson in verifying business opening hours!
It was a warm but enjoyable final outing as the students walked back through the city centre, completing a fantastic year of hands-on learning.
Celebrating excellence in STEM
Over the recent term break, Year 11 students Madeleine Marr and Rozalia Arnold, together with their teacher Mrs Clair Stanelos, had the privilege of attending a celebratory morning tea at Government House hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells, Governor of Tasmania.
The event was held to honour Tasmanian students chosen to take part in the upcoming National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in Canberra this January 2027.
We are so grateful to Government House and the Rotary Clubs of Tasmania – through their Rotary Youth Programs, for their continued support in helping our students pursue their passions.
We wish Madeleine and Rozalia the best of luck – we can't wait to follow along on their NYSF journey next year!
