Why Problem Solving Matters in Mathematics

Problem solving is at the heart of mathematics. It encourages students to think critically, make connections, persevere through challenges and explain their reasoning. Rather than simply finding the correct answer, students learn to ask questions, test ideas, choose efficient strategies and reflect on their thinking.

At Westbreen, we are helping students develop confidence as mathematical thinkers by providing rich, open-ended tasks that allow for multiple strategies and solutions. We encourage students to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and share their mathematical thinking with others.

You can support your child at home by asking questions such as:

How did you work that out?
Can you solve it in a different way?
Why do you think your answer is correct?

These websites complement the rich problem-solving approach we use at Westbreen Primary School and are great for extending mathematical thinking beyond the classroom.
