Magnify Around the Classrooms

Foundation

The Preps have been revising a lot of their tricky words, such as: his, were, her, one, look, there, has, them, have, here, of, with.  In handwriting, they have been practicing writing double letters ‘ll,’ ‘ff,’ ‘ss.’  Preps have also been completing word transformations and have been listening to words to identify their vowel sounds.  They are reading lots of sentences and revising learnt sounds throughout each week.  Grade Prep children have been enjoying the storybook, “Farmer John’s Tractor” and the related activities. 

Gr 1

Grade Ones have been learning about the past tense suffix –ed; They regularly revise their learnt tricky words and use word chains to practice their spelling.  Grade Ones are revising the ‘bossy e’ rule.  They are learning about verbs and adjectives and are identifying them in sentences.  Grade Ones are writing sentences with a subject and are joining two sentences using the word, ‘and,’ just like this one! 

Gr 2

Grade Twos have been revising tricky words and learning new ones.  Some Grade Twos have been learning about silent letters (w, b, k as in write, lamb and knit) and have learnt a new rule to help them know which graph/s to choose for the sound /k/ (c, k or ck).  Grade Twos have been learning how to take notes about a non-fiction text and then use their notes to write a report.  They’ve been listening to the story book, “Under the Southern Cross” and some children have been going out at night to see if they can spot the Southern Cross in our night sky. 

Foundation

Grade Preps are focusing on identifying the attribute of length, directly comparing the length of two objects and comparing the height of two objects.

Gr 1 

Grade Ones began the week with an assessment on addition and subtraction and are now focusing on their new measurement topic, ‘Time.’  They are ordering familiar events and comparing the duration of events. 

Gr 2

Grade Twos have been focusing on Multiplication and Division.  They are making arrays, skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, sharing a collection into equal groups, halving numbers and using bar models to represent ‘groups of.’ 

Gr 3 and 4

In Literacy, Students are continuing to read Storm Boy. During the next few lessons,students have been developing their reading comprehension skills by reading and understanding a range of texts using their knowledge of text structures and language features while monitoring their own understanding. They have been asking and answering questions to clarify meaning and deepen their understanding of texts, identifying and discussing how literary devices shape meaning, and learning and applying new vocabulary in context. Students have also practised summarising key ideas by creating concise, single-paragraph outlines that capture the main points of a text. 

In Maths, students have been developing their understanding of repeated addition by representing groups and solving sharing problems. They have also been following algorithms to generate number patterns and exploring geometry by identifying, naming, and comparing different types of angles. 

In Science, students are learning that there are simple properties of solids and liquids. They will have the opportunities to define materials and objects, identify and sort materials and objects and list the properties of solids and liquids 

Gr 5 and 6

In Maths, the Grade 5 students have been learning about 2D shapes, and in particular how to rotate, translate and reflect shapes. 

The Grade 6 students have moved on to looking at angles. We have been focusing on measuring angles using a protractor, naming angles and finding missing angles. Next week, we will move on to decimals. 

In English, the Grade 5 students have continued reading their book called ‘Tom Appleby Convict Boy’. This book is a compelling historical fiction novel set-in 18th-century England and Australia. The story follows the life of young Tom Appleby, a poor and orphaned boy living in London during the time when children faced dire circumstances. When Tom steals some money and a handkerchief, he is caught and sentenced to transportation, along with other convicts, to the distant shores of Australia.  

During this unit, the Grade 5’s will be focusing on writing an information report about ‘Convict Settlement in Australia’.  

Our Grade 6 students have been reading their book called ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman. Thisis a captivating and heart-wrenching historical novel written by Morris Gleitzman. Set during World War II, the story follows the journey of Felix Salinger, a young Jewish boy living in Poland. Felix possesses an innocent and optimistic outlook on life, despite the horrors unfolding around him. After his parents are forced to flee their home and leave him in an orphanage for his safety, Felix escapes to find them, believing they are still alive. Throughout his odyssey, Felix encounters numerous dangers and witnesses the devastating impact of the Nazi regime on Jewish communities. The narrative captures the atrocities and grim realities of the Holocaust through the innocent eyes of a child. Gleitzman delicately balances the heartbreak and hope, exploring themes of courage, resilience, and the enduring power of friendship. 

During this unit, the Grade 6’s will be focusing on writing an information report about the country of ‘Poland’.

In Science, The Grade 5’s are studying ‘Natural Disasters’, and the Grade 6’s have continued thier new topic this term all about ‘Habitats’.

During humanities, the Grade 5’s have continued their unit called ‘Changing Communities’ and the Grade 6’s have started a new unit all about ‘Federation’.
