6P -  Mrs Pettigrove

Over the last two week, our budding authors have been exploring the elements of a narrative. We began by building strong orientations that set the scene and introduce characters, before moving into problems, solutions, and cohesive sentences to hold our stories together. Students have experimented with figurative language to bring their writing to life, as well as techniques such as flashbacks and foreshadowing to add depth and suspense. Using prompts like Haunted House and Starry Night on a Hill, we have developed descriptive language and character development skills. Finally, we are learning how to edit and refine our writing to polish our narratives into engaging, finished pieces.

We are continuing to read and discuss the novel Holes in Reading lessons. Students are exploring how the author cleverly uses foreshadowing and flashbacks to build suspense and reveal important details. We are also examining character development and how each character changes throughout the story. Our discussions have focused on the ethical components in the text, particularly the influence of cultural norms, societal expectations, and personal values on the choices characters make.

Maths has focused on developing students problem-solving skills across a range of topics. We have been finding unknown numbers by using strategies to balance equations, matching decimals, fractions, and percentages to build number sense, and applying addition knowledge to solve subtraction problems. Students are also learning how to multiply decimals, strengthening their understanding of place value and real-world applications of mathematics.

In Civics and Citizenship students have been exploring the role of laws in our society. We have discussed what laws are, why we have them, and how they help keep communities safe and fair. Students have also learned about who enforces laws and the importance of these roles in maintaining order and justice.

In Design Technologies students are learning about food specialisations and how to make healthy food choices. We have been exploring the different food groups and discussing what a balanced diet looks like, helping students understand how the foods they eat can support their overall health and wellbeing.
