Level 3 & 4

Welcome to Week 7! We hope you all enjoyed an extended weekend, despite the shorter week it doesn’t mean we’re any less busy! Over the past week, our classrooms have been filled with meaningful discussions as we observed National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week.

CURRICULUM

Literacy

Spelling

We have finished learning all the Silent Final E (SFE) rules, so now it’s time to practise them altogether! We will also continue to revise the previous rules and find them in our reading and writing.

Reading

I Am Australian / compare and contrast with We Are Australian

We are looking at a different style of text this week – song lyrics! To support our CBL focus we read and unpack the lyrics to ‘I Am Australian’. We will find connections to what we have already learned within the lyrics and will compare and contrast with ‘We Are Australian’ and similar text that is told from an indigenous perspective.

Writing

In Writing, we will focus on sentence building by reviewing sentence types (simple, compound and complex) and use this practice to write our own Acknowledgements of Country.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

  • ask your child to identify words in the books they’re reading that have SFE rules in them
  • speak to your child about what is special about being Australian.

Maths

Grade 3

In Mathematics, Grade 3 students will continue with their exploration of length. They will continue using the metric system to compare, order and estimate lengths, while selecting the most appropriate metric unit to measure specific scenarios.

Grade 4

Students in Grade 4 will shift their learning about length to focus on concepts about perimeter and area. This will include measuring, calculating and identifying missing variables in perimeter and area problems.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

  • discuss length in everyday situations using words such as meters, kilometers and distance
  • encourage your child to practice measuring the length, perimeter and area of objects in their bedroom using rulers or tape measures, focusing on accuracy
  • encourage students to practice their times tables. Try saying your times tables out loud, writing them down, or asking someone to quiz you. There is also Multiverse on Mathletics that can be a fun interactive way to practice.

CBL (Challenge Based Learning)

In Week 7 our Challenge Based Learning will focus on the guiding questions, ‘How has colonisation impacted First Nation Peoples connection to Country (land, culture and language)?’ We will move to consider the contrast that was created by the impact of the British on the Aboriginal way of life.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

  • speak with your child about the aspects of Aboriginal life that would have been impacted by the British and why they chose to inhabit Australia.

Wellbeing

Respectful Relationships

Problem Solving

We are continuing to encourage students to be ‘Help Seekers’, but will add the lens of critical thinkers to that mix. It is difficult to effectively solve a problem without broadening your perspective and thinking critically about the problem from all sides – and we certainly needs lots of opportunities to practice these skills to use them well!
