An update from Julie

Last week was filled with lot of exciting learning and events. Our first indoor whole school assembly with a 9:00am start time was very successful and it was great to see so many parents able to attend.

Our Preps and their Grade 6 buddies had a very special time together at their annual Teddy Bear's picnic with lots of much-loved teddies and amazing picnic baskets full of delicious treats.

To capture and celebrate what makes Wonga Park PS such a special learning community Tim Phillips is using his amazing skills to create a movie that captures the voices and images of our students, parents, staff and community. We look forward to sharing our new movie with current and prospective families very soon!

The Big Idea of Country

Through rich literacy experiences using mentor texts, focused learning in Performing Arts and Visual Arts, incursions and excursions, Grade 5/6s learning 'on Country' at our local Clifford Park, and intentional work around signification events such as Reconciliation Week, National Sorry Day and Mabo Day, our students are engaged in wonderful learning experiences to deepen their understanding of our Big Idea of Country. These experiences are helping students develop a deeper appreciation of place, culture and community and we are excited to see how they will draw on their growing knowledge and understanding of Country to develop innovative solutions to their Challenge Based Learning challenges in the weeks ahead.

Breakfast Club starts TUESDAY!

The classroom fruit boxes have been a big hit, particularly in our junior grades, with many students choosing fruit as a healthy snack throughout the day.

We are very excited that our Breakfast Club will start this week! It will be running on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 8:2am in the SAKG kids kitchen and there will be toast, cereal and fruit available - all welcome!

Curriculum Day

Today's curriculum day has focussed on reviewing and refining our Challenge Based Learning inquiry process. Staff have worked together today to review the two year cycle of 8 Big Ideas and aligned it with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Incorporating ways to enhance learning with rich mentor texts, incursion and excursion opportunities, using our local area and beyond and accessing relevant programs and people was an important part of the work to ensure that through CBL our students are engaged and inspired to take action and make a difference.

Coffee and Chat

Our Coffee and Chats have been a great opportunity to meet with parents informally to share ideas, ask questions and find out more about what is going on in the school. It has also been a chance for parents to just get to know each other over a cuppa. We would love to see you if you are free on Thursday, 4th June at 2:35pm in the staffroom.

Prep 2027 Enrolments

We are pleased to have received initial confirmation that our enrolment cap for 2027 remains at 66 students, enabling the school to continue to offer three prep classes next year. If you have a sibling starting next year we ask that you enrol them as soon as possible via the Insight portal or in hard copy. Please contact Kerry or Lesley if you need any assistance with this. Small group tours are still available on Tuesdays and Thursdays or by appointment on alternative days.

Upcoming Interviews and Lines of Communication

Please put the 13th July (first day of Term 3) in your diary. It is our final curriculum day for the year and is a pupil-free day. The curriculum focus of the first session of the day will be writing which will be followed from 11:00am by parent/teacher/student interviews that can be either online or face-to-face. Booking information will be emailed to families closer to the date.

Please note that parents do not need to wait for scheduled parent/teacher interviews if they have any concerns that they wish to discuss with their child's classroom teacher. Parents are always welcome to reach out at any time by emailing or phoning the office with your request and your child’ s teacher will contact you to make a convenient time.

Trading: Football Cards, Pokemon Cards and Squishy toys

Recently, we have seen issues arise from football and Pokémon cards and squishy toys being brought to school, particularly around trading and disagreements between students. Younger students can find it difficult to understand the value of some cards, which can sometimes lead to confusion or upset.

To support positive play experiences and avoid misunderstandings, our expectation is that cards and squishy toys are not to be traded at school. Our preference is that trading cards and squishy toys remain at home and are not brought to school.

We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a positive and enjoyable environment for all students.

Everyone Belongs on the Field – Disability Football Opportunities

Sport provides much more than physical activity, it builds confidence, friendships, teamwork and a sense of belonging. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience these benefits and participate in activities that celebrate their strengths and interests.

Across Victoria there are a range of inclusive football opportunities available for children and young people living with disability. Football Victoria's All Abilities programs are designed to ensure that players of all abilities have access to football in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment. Programs cater for a broad range of physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities, with a strong focus on participation, enjoyment, connection and skill development.

Opportunities include club-based All Abilities programs, junior leagues, wheelchair football, blind and vision-impaired football, para football pathways and futsal options. Football Victoria's All Abilities League also provides modified environments and supports to ensure everyone can participate successfully.

Creating opportunities where all children feel valued, included and connected helps strengthen our whole school community.

Cyber Safety Tip: Helping Children Manage Big Feelings Online

Sometimes children can feel frustrated or upset when gaming, especially when they lose or encounter unkind behaviour. Talking about managing emotions and taking breaks can help children develop healthy gaming habits and resilience.

Cyber Safety Project Parent Webinar Series (regular newsletter article)

The Cyber Safety Project offers the Cyber Safe Parents 2026 Webinar Series, a practical, engaging online program designed to help families raise smart, safe, and kind digital kids.

Across four live online sessions, parents will gain clear, realistic strategies to confidently support children at home. Topics include:

Balancing Life & Tech – Reducing conflict and restoring healthy screen balance.
3 August 2026 | 7.30pm AEST (45 mins)
Cyberbullying & Resilience – Supporting young people to manage wellbeing online

This series provides valuable guidance for navigating device set up, online risks, app safety, screen time, critical thinking and digital wellbeing, all in a supportive and parent-friendly format.
