Geelong Saints
Geelong Saints Hockey Club is calling on new junior players to pick up a stick and have a go during March.
Saints will be hosting free training sessions for juniors, aged 7-12, to learn the basics of hockey as part of a City of Greater Geelong community grant.
The aim of the grant is to support inclusion, health and wellbeing and it covers equipment, coaching and snacks afterwards, so there are no up-front fees for participants.
The “Stick with Hockey” sessions will be held each Wednesday in March for four weeks, 5pm-6pm starting Wednesday March 4th at Stead Park, Corio.
The sessions are for kids who may have had a hit at school and for kids who have never picked up a stick before.
The new players will have specific coaches for the four sessions, will be supplied with equipment and provided with a light meal afterwards. The focus for training will be on learning the basics, building fitness and learning the rules in a fun and supportive environment.
The club has appointed two dedicated coaches from the women’s senior team to run training.
The sessions will be run alongside the Saints junior training to help build connections with the club. It will be a pathway into playing the winter season, summer season, or any of the various tournaments local players are involved in.
The aim of the program is to bring fresh faces into Hockey Geelong and build towards the Project 1200 goals of 1200 people playing hockey in Geelong.
The sessions will be held Geelong Hockey Centre, Stead Park, 5pm-6pm Wednesdays March 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th.
