Year 3 & 4 Junior Hoop Time Basketball Competition - Friday 7th June at State Basketball Centre

For 2024, our school will be joining in the Basketball Victoria Junior Hoop Time inter school competition. The Junior Hoop Time competition offers Year 3 and 4 students a fun opportunity for our students to compete against other schools in a round robin basketball competition.

Our school has entered only an Allstar Girls and All Star Boys this year to compete at the State Basketball Centre on Friday 7th June.

Selection to represent St Simon the Apostle for these teams will be based on their basketball and team based skills displayed in the Physical Education program and their participation in community based domestic and Rep basketball competitions. Each team will consist of a small number of 7 to 8 students so students can get an ample amount of time on the court to play and compete for our school.

Parents will receive an Operoo permission form at the start of next week stating if their child has made the basketball team for the Junior Hoop Time competition.

SSV Senior District Basketball Competition

The SSV Wantirna District Basketball competition will be in Term 3, consisting of our school's best girls and boys basketball team from Year 5 and 6.

Selection for both teams will be based on the students skills and teamwork displayed within the Physical Education basketball unit of learning. Another factor in the selection will be team cohesion and position as well. There will be considerations for students who compete not only at the Victorian rep level but at a high domestic level for a community club.

This competition will be through the School Sport Victoria pathway consisting of the entry level of the District and advancement to Division, Regional and State. Hopefully we will be able to have the same success or better than last year!

Details of the SSV District Basketball competition are listed below:

Date: Monday 22nd July

Venue: State Basketball Centre, Wantirna South

Team announcement: Both the girls and boys team and coaches will be announced in the next newsletter.

It should be noted that student involvement in the Senior Hoop Time inter school competition for our year 5 and 6 students will be announced at a later date.

Parent Helpers

Our school is in need of parents to volunteer with coaching or supporting a team for the Winter Sports competition. Our students in their teams always appreciate the expertise provided by our coaching parent volunteers and our teams have been even more successful with their support. In addition, parent support provides teachers with a stronger focus on supervising the students at each event.

We require the following parent volunteers to on BOTH or EITHER Thursday 6th June and Friday 21st June.

Without parent volunteers, there may be the possibility a team may not be able to compete.

Some knowledge of the rules of the sport would be beneficial but not required. Mainly a coaching role will involve instructing and encouraging the team while rotating the substitutions fairly. If you are able to support us in one of these volunteer roles, please select our interest in the Operoo permission form or email Mr Karl Camerino at karl.camerino@ssrowville.catholic.edu.au

If you know of someone who has expressed an interest in supporting us, please also email Karl Camerino of their intention to volunteer in one of the above roles. A reminder that all volunteers need to have their Working with Children Check and sign the school’s volunteer documents at the school office.

Knox Division AFL Girls Championships

We are excited to once again send our 24 selected Year 5 and 6 girls to the Knox Division AFL Girls Championships. Congratulations to the following girls who will represent our school with pride on the AFL field.

The championships will take place on Thursday 23rd May in Term 2 at Kings Park Reserve, Upper Ferntree Gully. There will be training offered before school to prepare our team before the championships. We hope your child can make these sessions offered to support them with their kicking, marking, handball and game plays skills.

In the event of undesirable weather conditions, the training will take place in the school hall opposite the school soccer pitch.

Knox Rebel Sport Community Partnership with St Simon's

Knox Rebel Sport has been a wonderful sponsor of our school in the past and this year. All purchases at this store by parents of the St Simon’s school community provide our school with store credits. These credits are used to provide the school with sporting equipment for sporting activities.

We highly recommend that the next time you visit or purchase an item from Rebel Sport in Knox, ask how to earn credits for our school. Thank you all for your support of our school through our Knox Rebel Sport Community partnership.
