Weekly Values Focus

Week 10: Footscray West students value what we share
At Footscray West Primary School, we understand that belonging means celebrating who we are, while also recognising the many things we share. When we notice the values, behaviours, and goals we have in common, we build a strong sense of “us.” This helps everyone feel connected, included, and part of something bigger than themselves.
Valuing what we share means understanding that everyone is an important part of our community. No one is more important than anyone else, and we all follow the same expectations to keep our school safe and fair. When we make choices that support the group - like following rules, taking turns, and being respectful - we help create a place where everyone can feel secure and supported.
We also build stronger connections when we focus on the similarities we have with others. Many of us experience the same feelings, challenges, and successes, even if they look a little different on the outside. When we notice these shared experiences, it helps us feel understood and reminds us that we are not alone. It helps us build a strong, clear and stable sense of self. Everyone is special, but no more special than anyone else. This is why we value the ordinary - it’s a healthy mindset!
Being a great member of our community is about being part of the collective group - it’s about doing the things we value together. This might look like being a caring friend, trying our best, including others, and taking responsibility for our actions. These qualities are after all, at the core of our well-being and at the heart of a better and more just world.
This week, think about how you can focus on what we share. How do you show our school values each day? How do your choices help others feel included? Small actions like these make a big difference and help everyone feel like they belong.
