Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents & Carers,

The end of term 3 has come racing in a whirlwind of activity over the last few weeks with Year 4 Hooptime, Division Athletics, planning week and Footy Day. It is hard to believe we are heading towards the final term of the year!

What Happened in 3/4 This Fortnight?

English

During our Structured Literacy sessions, we have been learning about the prefixes en- and em-. We have explored how these prefixes can change the meaning of a word and can mean “to cause to,” “to put into,” “within” or “in.”

Our Grammar focus has been on prepositional phrases in sentences to show more detail about when, where, how and why something happens. We have also been revising punctuation skills and the effective use of ellipsis in writing. 

To finish our Reading and Writing unit, students wrote their own detailed information reports about dragons. They used facts gathered during our note-taking sessions to plan and organise their ideas. Students worked on creating interesting introductions to hook their readers, and body paragraphs filled with factual information. They also learnt how to finish their reports with a clear conclusion. It has been fantastic to see students apply their reading, research and writing skills to create informative and engaging reports.

Maths

We completed our Multiplicative Thinking Unit by using our multiplication and division knowledge to solve number sequences and real-life problems. Students continued practising their times tables facts and building their fact recall through our regular use of Facts on Fire and XtraMath. 

Over the past two weeks, our focus has shifted towards post-assessing students’ understanding of multiplication and division through Essential Assessment (EA) and a written summative assessment. Students have also completed a pre-assessment for our Term 4 Fractional Thinking Unit, helping us identify their current understanding and plan for their learning next term.

Inquiry: Explorers Unit

Over the last 2 weeks, we have completed our Term 3 Inquiry unit on Early Explorers. Students worked together to create a Stop Motion Animation based on a chosen Early Explorer we researched in class or Life on the Ships. The planning, filming and creation was completed using the skills they learned from our incredible Stop Motion Incursion. They were very proud of their creations and excited to share their final pieces with the class. 

Friendology/Wellbeing

Within our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program, we focused on help-seeking and developing students’ confidence in asking for support when they need it. Students applied their learning by writing a story for a younger student facing a challenge, sharing strategies they could use to solve problems and seek help from others. 

Looking ahead to Term 4

Last week was Planning Week for all teachers. The Year 3/4 teachers spent the day thoroughly planning and preparing for Term 4, and we are looking forward to what’s to come in the final term of 2026.

• Literacy: Sentence structure, adverbs, direct speech and reading comprehension 
• Writing: Narratives
• Mathematics: Fractions, Measurement - Length, Angles, Shape and Symmetry, Mass and Capacity.
• Wellbeing: RRRR (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships)
• Inquiry: Festivals and Celebrations
