From the Principal's Office

As always, it has been a busy term.  We extend our sincere appreciation to the staff who empower and enable students to seize opportunities, develop and contribute to the school and broader communities, and shine as great examples of confident, respectful and compassionate citizens. We could not be more proud of the way in which our students have taken up opportunities to excel and support one another in and out of the classroom.

Year 12 Mentors

Developmental research shows that having one or more caring adults in a child’s life increases the likelihood that they will flourish and become productive adults themselves. The Nossal High School program involves students working with a volunteer teacher and holding regular meetings to discuss their progress in Year 12 studies. The students can seek the support of their mentors for developing organisational skills such as creating a study timetable and preparing for assessment tasks, goal setting, and understanding their learning styles.

All Year 12 students were treated to a barbecue lunch with their mentors on Wednesday 2 April 2025. This was the first of many meetings that that the students will have with their mentors. It was an opportunity to connect with each other and set personal goals.

Relay for Life

A large number of our students, particularly members of the SRC, joined forces with their peers from other Select Entry Schools to participate in the recent Relay for Life event held in Hawthorn on Saturday 22 March. The Nossal team raised money in support of the Cancer Council and took advantage of the day to build and strengthen relationships with their select entry peers from across Melbourne. A special vote of thanks goes to members of the SRC who worked diligently to organise the event and the parents who helped on the day.

Reminder: Winter Uniform from the start of Term 2

We want to take this opportunity to remind our families that, with the start of Term 2, we will transition to our Winter Uniform. We understand that it may have been some time since students have worn the Winter Uniform and some items may require tailoring/adjustments to accommodate growth. We are providing communication now, to give you time to make the required adjustments.

Posters of the uniform can be found in all tutorial rooms and the NHS Student Handbook. For those who need further clarification, please refer to Student Handbook 2025 page 15.

Where students are unable to wear the full winter uniform, as outlined in the uniform policy, they must provide a note from their parents or guardians. Families are reminded that the second-hand uniform shop is open during the school term on the first Monday of the month. We also have some items of school uniforms that we can lend students for a short time.

Students should speak to their tutorial teachers or Head of House for support

The PFA Uniform Shop will be open before school on the first day of Term 2 (Monday 5 May) from 8.30 am if uniform items are required.

SRC 2025 Raffle tickets

The Student Representative Council will be selling raffle tickets for $2 during the weeks ahead. We ask parents to support this worthy cause by donating to their students. The money will contribute to the Nossal 4 Nossal fund, which is the fund that is used to support students within our school.

There are some amazing prizes, several $100 vouchers from local businesses, books, art supplies and other items.

There are several other consolation prizes. The draw will take place during Week 6; please check Compass and your email for more information about the raffle.

Early Term 2 Events

As the first term comes to a close, we have reached the day when our Term 1 reports will be published to parents (4:00 p.m., 03/04/2025, via Compass). These reports are, of course, very much interim reports; they are based on a quite short period of class work and incorporate a significant amount of diagnostic assessment on the part of many teachers as they get to know their students.

To this end, with the release of the reports, will also come the ability to make appointments for Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences on either Wednesday 23 April, or Thursday 24 April. These conferences will be held in person at the school.

School Holidays

School holidays are a golden opportunity for students to take a breather from the demanding school routine, enjoy the luxury of leisurely days, and delve into their hobbies and interests. It's crucial to remember the vital role of rest and relaxation during these breaks, as they are key factors in students’ overall well-being and academic success.

Dr Daniel Siegel has developed a tool called ‘The Healthy Mind Platter’, which contains seven daily essential activities to ensure a balanced approach to life and, therefore, optimal well-being.

One of the activities in ‘The Healthy Mind Platter’ is DOWNTIME.

Young people need to have sufficient downtime (at all times), particularly during the school holidays, to reset their nervous systems. Rest and relaxation allow the body and mind to recover and rejuvenate, which is crucial for maintaining overall health and wellbeing.

From a neurological perspective, research has shown that downtime helps young people regulate their emotions, reduce stress levels, and improve memory and cognitive function.

We also want you to be safe during the holidays.

Have a wonderful break!
