School Captains' Report

Term 1 was as jam-packed as ever for the students of Nossal High School, with numerous events and activities for our students to get involved in. As we go into the holidays, the School Captains would like to reflect on some of the highlights from the first 10 weeks of the 2025 school year.
Harmony Week, which took place between the 24 and 28 February, was the first major project of the Nossal School Captains and Student Representative Council. A myriad of presentations and displays were organised to showcase the immense diversity and multiculturalism of our school. These included dance performances by Nossal’s brilliant Bollywood and K-Dance clubs, Southside’s delicious Falooda sale, Art Club’s chalk drawing competition, African drumming and Henna! Overall, it was a wonderful week, and we’d like to extend our thanks to everyone that played a role in making it happen.
The school captains also had the invaluable opportunity to attend the International Women’s Day breakfast hosted at the Mac. Robertson Girls High School on Friday 28 February. The program included inspiring speakers on the Q&A panel and guest speaker, Professor Elif Ekinci, who spoke on the 2025 theme ‘March Forward: It’s Time to Turn Promises into Progress’. In addition to being an enjoyable chance to network, the breakfast provided insight into the work of women in male-dominated fields, serving as a reminder that education is a privilege and motivating us to always pursue our dreams regardless of society’s gendered constraints.
On Tuesday 18 March, Camps and Pathways Week kicked off and, as always, it was a highlight for everyone involved. The Year 9s set off to Roses Gap for a week of outdoor adventure including the flying fox, giant swing and nighttime activities such as Trivia.
Year 10s enjoyed a range of activities, including volunteering excursions to Puffing Billy and the Transit Soup Kitchen as well as VET courses such as Barista and Restaurant Waiting Service Skills, all with plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning and fun.
Year 11s also took part in the annual Edutest re-sit on Wednesday, providing a great chance to see how much new learning has been embedded over their time here at Nossal. It's always gratifying to see how much we have grown in such a short period of time, a true testament to the efficacy Nossal’s culture of agentic learning.
Meanwhile, the Year 12s embarked on their camp at Lord Somers, where they enjoyed a variety of exciting activities, including kayaking, surfing and screen-printing. It was a fantastic chance for them to build teamwork skills, challenge themselves, and make unforgettable memories in their final year of high school.
House Cross-Country, on Tuesday 25 March, was also a huge success, with students showing incredible determination and spirit across all year levels. Congratulations to all the participants, and to Phoenix House for the overall victory. The competition was fierce, and it was fantastic to see such great sportsmanship and enthusiasm from everyone involved. A special shout-out goes to all the teachers involved with helping to set up and facilitate this event; we couldn’t have done it without you!
To conclude, the School Captains would once again like to thank everyone for all their hard work and initiative in making Term 1 a success, you have all truly embraced the challenge.
We wish the entire school community a safe and restful break, and we look forward to seeing you all in Term 2!
