Year 1/2 Mathematics - Exploring 2D shapes and 3D objects

Our Year 1/2 students have begun the term exploring the fascinating world of shapes. Throughout the unit, they have been investigating both two-dimensional (2D) shapes and three-dimensional (3D) objects through a range of engaging, hands-on learning activities.

Working collaboratively, students have learnt to identify, describe and sort shapes according to their features, including the number of sides, vertices and parallel lines. They have also explored quadrilaterals, regular and irregular polygons, and investigated how shapes can be combined and divided to create new shapes.

By the end of Week 2, students were confidently identifying and describing a variety of three-dimensional objects, comparing their features and applying their knowledge during class discussions and practical activities. It has been wonderful to see their mathematical vocabulary and confidence continue to grow, along with their awareness of the many shapes that surround us in our everyday environments.

1/2RS Parallel Town

As part of our learning about parallel lines, the students in 1/2RS created their very own Parallel Towns.

This engaging hands-on activity helped students develop their understanding of parallel lines by identifying and using them to design roads, pathways and town layouts. Students also incorporated the three-dimensional objects they also created in class, transforming them into buildings to complete their town.

It was wonderful to see students applying their mathematical knowledge in a creative way while working collaboratively to bring their Parallel Town to life.

Equal grouping and sharing using materials

Students have been learning about equal grouping and sharing by using hands-on materials such as counters, blocks and everyday objects. These activities help the children understand that multiplication is making equal groups, while division is sharing or grouping items equally.

1/2 Language and literature: The Boy who tried to shrink his name by Sandhya Parappukkaran.

Gallery Image

This term, one of the our picture book studies was The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name by Sandhya Parappukkaran. Through this story, we learnt about the importance of identity, belonging and celebrating what makes each of us unique.

As we read and discussed the text together, the children developed their comprehension skills by making predictions, asking questions, identifying characters' feelings and discussing the message of the story.  We also had lots of fun learning to say the characters name 'Zimdalamashkermishkada'.  Please ask your child to show you how to say it - they are now professionals!!  The children Thare also building their vocabulary and learning how authors use words and illustrations to help readers understand characters and their experiences.

The story has encouraged thoughtful conversations about kindness, inclusion and respect for others. Students have reflected on the significance of their own names, where they come from and how our names are an important part of who we are. This learning supports our classroom values of being respectful and helps foster a welcoming environment where every student feels valued and included.
