Junior Debate Team
On 3 June, the THS junior debate team — Sadie, Aaliyah, Chelsea, and Leah hosted Guyra Central School in the first round of the 2026 Premier Debating Challenge.
THS argued the affirmative side, supporting the prioritisation of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander languages over global languages.
Sadie opened, Aaliyah rebutted, and Chelsea concluded, all delivering strong speeches. Lucy-Anne chaired confidently, and Charlie handled timekeeping. In a closely contested round, Guyra emerged victorious. Congratulations to everyone involved, and a big thank you to their coach, Miss Keddy!
The debate against Armidale Secondary on Friday 19 June, was a notable success. The topic of discussion was, "Should swimming lessons be compulsory for Years 7 and 8?"
Following a coin toss, our team was assigned the negative stance, arguing against the proposition.
Sadie opened the debate with a well-structured and confident introduction. Charlie, our second speaker, presented her arguments assertively and effectively countered points made by the opposing team.
Chelsea, our third speaker, delivered strong rebuttals and provided an excellent summary of our team's position. Finally, Hailee, our fourth speaker, concluded by expressing gratitude to the opposing team for their hospitality.
Although Armidale Secondary emerged victorious, our team received commendations from the adjudicator for their eloquence and delivery. A special thanks to Coach Miss Keddy for her guidance and support.
High Potential & Gifted Education
At Tenterfield High School, we take great pride in supporting our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students. Our HPGE programs offer customised learning experiences designed to challenge and inspire students, fostering both academic and creative excellence.
Recently, a study skills program equipped participants with essential tools for personal growth, enabling each student to realise their full potential. Mr Douglas and Mr Marshman delivered a tutorial on the Cornell note making system at a recent study skills workshop.
This is a sophisticated approach that uses a structure to help students move from note takers to note makers. One of the secrets to success for a senior student is to have a systematic, structured approach to what they learn in class.
The Cornell approach makes students active participants in their own learning rather than passive receivers of knowledge. Students have been tasked with initiating this in their classes and showing evidence that they have completed this effectively.
On June 15, our senior students participated in the Elevate Education high-impact study skills program. The Year 12 sessions focused on techniques for self-motivation, breaking goals into manageable tasks and deadlines, stress management strategies for overall well-being, and establishing effective study routines for study leave and holidays. In contrast, the Year 11 sessions emphasized utilising the syllabus to structure study plans, developing routines that balance study with lifestyle, engaging in high-value work, and employing strategies to overcome procrastination.
Formal Assembly
Our Term 2 Formal Assembly took place on Tuesday 23 June. It is always a pleasure to celebrate our students' achievements and share these moments with their families. Congratulations to all students who received academic awards, as well as those who were honoured with major awards.
A special commendation goes to Cooper and Annabelle, recipients of the Principal's Award.
Aged Care
On Wednesday, students visited Tenterfield Care, where they engaged in a game of Bingo with the residents. This activity proved to be a rewarding experience for both the students and the residents alike.
Careers
Our Year 9/10 Ag & Year 11 Primary Industry students attended the Farrer Agriculture Expo on 11 June, where they had the opportunity to explore the latest advancements in agricultural technology, job prospects, and career pathways.
A huge congratulations to our girls' team for their outstanding victory in the Farmers Challenge finals, competing against schools from across the region. Special thanks to Mrs Clothier and Mr Clay for accompanying the students.
On 9 June, some of our Year 9 and 10 students visited the Essential Energy Tenterfield depot to explore exciting career opportunities and pathway options. It was a fantastic chance for students to learn about the energy industry and see firsthand what their futures could hold.

On 26 May, our Year 9 careers class had the pleasure of hosting Mr Mark Roberts from Apprenticeship Support Australia. He shared valuable insights into vocational and educational pathways, focusing on apprenticeships and traineeships. We extend our gratitude to Mr Roberts for his time and the informative session.
Year 6 Transition
Year 6 students from local primary schools joined us for their very first transition day on 9 June! The students had an engaging music lesson with Mr Ryan and History with Miss Keddy, who will also be their Year advisor next year. Thank you to our visiting schools, students and staff who contributed to making this transition day enjoyable.
