Stage One Science

Mrs Nugent and Ms Faint had a wonderful science lesson in Stage One yesterday afternoon.

The children have been learning to describe how the properties of materials determine their use.

In order to do this they first had to understand that different materials can be combined for a particular purpose!

Our Stage One students looked at face masks and the investigated why the designers made the face masks the way they do.

They observed scientists testing their different face mask designs and then in a guided investigation of surgical facemaks, they began to explore each part and explain its purpose.

They answered the following questions:

  • Did you find anything extra in your face mask?
  • What was the face mask made from?  How many layers and why?
  • What is its purpose?

After drawing a labelled diagram of their own designs, the Stage One students collected available materials and made a face mask.

They used each other, Mrs Nugent and Ms Faint to check if their face mask followed the design rules and to see if they could anser WHY they chose particular materials to use. We hope you enjoy the early results of their hands on design!

Stage One Maths

Over that past 2 weeks, Stage 1 have been learning about Data in Mathematics. They have collected data in a number of ways and on many different topics. They even went to Stage 3 to collect information and data from our senior students. Some of the questions were "What is your favourite type of Motorbike?", "How many animals do you have at home?" and "What is your favourite fruit?".
