Symbols of God:  Water

The Burning Bush — Exodus 3:1–6

Throughout the Bible, God often uses ordinary things to reveal who He is. Water is one of these powerful symbols. It can be gentle and life-giving, or wild and untameable. One of the most striking pictures of water in Scripture is found in the story of Moses and the Red Sea.

In Exodus 14, the Israelites found themselves trapped. Pharaoh's army was closing in behind them, and ahead lay the vast waters of the Red Sea. There seemed to be no way forward and no way back. Yet in that moment of fear, God did something no one expected. He instructed Moses to stretch out his hand, and the sea parted, creating a path of dry ground with walls of water on either side (Exodus 14:21–22). The people walked through to safety, and the very water that had blocked their way became the means of their deliverance.

This story reminds us that water in the Bible is never just water. It also represents God's power, His presence, and His faithfulness to His people even in impossible situations. For the Israelites, the Red Sea became a symbol of freedom and a fresh start, a moment they would remember and retell for generations as proof that God had not abandoned them.

For us today, this story still speaks. We all face moments that feel like the sea before Moses - obstacles that seem too big, situations where we can't see a way through. The story of the Red Sea invites us to trust that God can make a way even when we cannot. It also reminds us that God asks us to take a step of faith, just as the Israelites had to walk forward into the parted sea, trusting in His provision before they could see the full outcome.

May we be encouraged by this story that God is present in the difficult moments, that He makes a way where there seems to be none, and that we can place our trust in Him even when the path ahead is not yet clear.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who makes a way through impossible situations. Just as You parted the sea for Your people, help us to trust You when we face challenges we cannot see beyond. Give us courage, faith, and hope, knowing that You walk with us every step of the way. Amen.
