Religion:

Unit: Creator God  (Weeks 1 -5 )

This unit focuses on God the creator who is present in all of creation. The first creation story is presented, focusing on creation as a reflection of God’s love and goodness. Emphasis is then turned to the Sabbath, rest time. The unit also introduces psalms of praise as a way of expressing our praise and thanks to God.

English:

The children are learning to write a Persuasive text in weeks 1 -5. The children know that the purpose of a persuasive text is to convince the reader to agree with their opinion. Our Talk Homework texts will reflect this topic so we encourage families to spend a little time together talking about each topic. Talk Homework is sent home in a paper copy with the children and will be available through Compass each week.

Maths:

Unit: Forming Groups - Fractions of a Collection

The children are learning to recognise and represent division by using concrete materials to model a half of a collection and show the relation between the half and the whole.

Tips for Parents

  • Involve your child in cooking activities which require half or a quarter of a cup of an ingredient. They could half fill the cup measure for you.
  • When making sandwiches or cutting other foods, talk about how you cut them into halves. Use words such as half, even, equal, parts, quarters, four equal parts, eighths;
  • Involve your child in sharing with another ensuring that each person has a fair share. Both halves need to be equal.

Geography:

Unit: Weather & Seasons

We are learning about the concept of why it is important to know about the weather.  We will investigate the idea that the weather helps with our daily lives including: safety in the sun and on the water, safety for people with allergies, its importance for farmers growing food, importance for choosing a holiday, importance for deciding on appropriate clothing and activities.

Year 3

Week 3 & 4 year 3 will be learning about length in their maths unit. Written below are some tips for parents.

Tips for parents:

Measure Objects Together: Encourage your child to measure objects at home, starting with larger items in metres and centimetres, then moving to smaller ones in millimetres. This helps them practice using different units.

Estimate and Check: Ask your child to estimate the length of objects before measuring them. This builds their estimation skills and reinforces the use of benchmarks.

Emphasise Precision: Discuss why precise measurements matter, especially for small objects. Practice measuring small items in millimetres and recording them accurately using the correct abbreviations.

Year 4

Religion

Weeks 1-5: Prayer: Being with God.  In this unit students will explore prayer and ways of praying as a means of developing their prayer life. They will be introduced to experiences of prayer, drawn from the rich Catholic spiritual heritage. Students will explore the place and purpose of prayer and a variety of prayer styles.

Weeks 6-10: Advent To Christmas: A Time for Journeying in Hope. This unit explores the concept of journey. We learn about the journeys of people of the Old Testament and God’s faithful relationship with them. The unit also examines the New Testament journeys of Mary and Joseph and the Wise Men. During Advent we focus on our preparation for the journey towards Christmas and the second coming of Christ in glory. We focus on ways we can respond to God-with-us on our journeys of faith and life.

EnglishOur unit focuses on developing students' understanding of Perspective and Authority, Narrative, Point of View, and Genre. Students understand that narratives may be interpreted in various ways. They learn that characters and events may be drawn differently for different purposes, audiences, modes and media and stories may be interpreted through action, character and setting. Students investigate how stories present a view of the world. Students understand authority and authorship are different aspects of texts. They learn that responses to and interpretations of a text may vary and may have more or less validity and authors may shape interpretation of a text but may not be able to control it. Students recognise that their understanding of the worlds in texts is shaped by their own personal experience and culture.
MathsWeeks 1-2: Representing Numbers using Place Value: Decimals, Weeks 3-4: Geometric Measure: Length, Weeks 5-6 Additive Relations: (Money),  Weeks 7-8 Non-spatial Measure: Time, Weeks 9-10 Three-dimensional Spatial Structure: Volume
HSIE

Geography

Significance of Environments - These lessons focus on the investigation of the significance of the natural environment of Australia.

Perception of Environments - These lessons present examples of different people and their views about their own local environment.

Protection of Environments - These lessons focus on sustainability and how different people, groups and communities sustain and protect their environment.

ScienceIn this Design and Technology unit, the students explore how technology is used in food and fibre production and how kitchen equipment is used to prepare a variety of foods. They follow the Design and Production process to design, plan, produce and evaluate a model of a water irrigation system.
PDH/PE

PE: Students will  explore the elements of dance, skills, techniques and processes through the practices of choreography, performance and appreciation. Students will develop their skills in target games by participating in a range of skills practices and  minor games to explore different techniques to propel an object towards a target.

PDH: Students will recognise how empathy and respect promotes inclusion by exploring cultural diversity including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. They will identify the influence of peers, family and their community when forming their own ideas on significant issues such as appreciating and celebrating differences.

Visual Arts

Drama –Performing and appreciating our traditional folktales and fables.

Dance: In this unit, Year 4 students will step into the spotlight as creative movement artists, exploring space, time, dynamics, and relationships to express ideas and tell stories. Through hands-on choreography and performance, students will experiment with dance techniques and collaborate to craft their own original routines. They will also build critical appreciation skills by watching, reflecting on, and discussing their own works, peer performances, and dance traditions from diverse cultures.

Mathematics:

The students are working toward putting their new angle knowledge straight into action with our unit on 2-Dimensional shapes —using angle sizes and side lengths to investigate, compare, and classify different 2D shapes.

We will be:

  • Classifying Triangles: Identifying and sorting triangles by side lengths and internal angles into equilateral (all sides and angles equal), isosceles (two equal sides and angles), scalene (all sides and angles different), and right-angled triangles.
  • Properties of Quadrilaterals & Polygons: Investigating 4-sided shapes (squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, trapeziums, and kites) as well as other polygons (pentagons, hexagons, octagons). Students learn that shapes can be classified in multiple ways based on parallel sides, side lengths, and interior angles.
  • Regular vs. Irregular Shapes: Distinguishing between regular polygons (where all sides and internal angles are equal) and irregular polygons (where sides or angles differ).
  • Symmetry & Transformations:
    • Finding vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines of symmetry (reflective symmetry).
    • Understanding rotational symmetry (how many times a shape looks identical to its original position as it completes a full 360* turn).

English:

Heroes, Villains and Freedom Fighters

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 has been exploring the question, “Was Ned Kelly a hero or a villain?” Students have examined different perspectives of this controversial Australian bushranger, considering how a person’s actions and the viewpoints of others can influence the way history remembers them. We have also explored the concept of freedom fighters, discussing what motivates people to stand up for their beliefs and challenge injustice. Through engaging discussions and critical thinking, students have been developing their ability to consider different perspectives, support their opinions with evidence and recognise that historical figures can be viewed in very different ways.

In Religion, Year 5 has been exploring the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church and their significance in our faith journey. Students have been learning about how each sacrament celebrates an important moment in our relationship with God and the Church. To demonstrate their understanding, students created their own Sacrament Roadmaps, visually mapping out the seven sacraments and reflecting on how each one guides and strengthens us throughout our lives as Catholics.

St Joseph's Cup Finalists:

The competition was fierce with students vying for the opportunity to present their St Joseph's Cup poem in front of the whole school. There can however, only two students could progress through t the final.

The Year 5 finalists this year are Adalyn & Stella!

Congratulations to all Year 5 students for having the courage to stand up in front of their peers and recite a poem as public speaking can be quite daunting.
