We have recognised NAIDOC Week by having a display showing the strength and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples. One groundbreaking book is “Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia” edited by Anita Heiss features 52 different essays from first Nations people across the entire country. Many themes are explored in this anthology such as identity, connection to country, the Stolen Generations and resilience. 

One of the essays called “The Sporting Life” by AFL great Adam Goodes emphasises setting goals to achieve your dream you need role models , you need to be a good listener and to learn from your elders.’ 

Anita Heiss has tried to answer what it is like to grow up Aboriginal in Australia through many diverse voices where all of the contributors speak from the heart.
