SENIOR SPORTS
GRADE 5/6 INTER-SCHOOL SPORT
Today, our Grade 5/6 students competed against Coral Park Primary School. They performed admirably and demonstrated commendable sportsmanship throughout their various sports. Congratulations to all the participants from Grade 5/6 for their efforts today. They are enhancing their understanding of strategies to improve their gameplay, which will contribute to their confidence and preparedness for the upcoming Lightning Prem later this term.
For Inter-school Sport, Grades 5 and 6 students will be participating in one of the following sports: Cricket, Tennis, Basketball, Handball and Softball Five games and a lightning premiership against local schools have been scheduled. The schools we are playing, dates and locations for these events are as follows:

SFS TERM 3 AUSKICK CENTRE COMING!!
Parents a reminder that our SFS Auskick Program begins in Week 6 on Wednesday August 19th from 3.20pm – 4.20pm. Tyler is happy to run a separate group for the girls if we have enough registrations. There will be 4 sessions and the cost will be $55. Like last year students who register will also receive a pack sent to their home.

Junior SWAP
This term in our Student Wellbeing and Performing Arts (SWAP) program, students have been exploring Topic 8 of Respectful Relationships: Positive Gender Relationships through drama experiences.
Using role-play, stories, discussions and finger puppets, students have been learning what kind, safe and respectful behaviour looks, sounds and feels like in everyday interactions.
Through a range of drama scenarios, students have used their body, voice and facial expressions to communicate emotions and demonstrate positive ways to respond to different social situations. They have explored how words and actions can impact others, developed empathy by considering how someone might feel, and practised being supportive friends who include, encourage and respect everyone.
Students have also been building practical strategies for responding to challenging situations by learning how to:
- recognise respectful and disrespectful behaviour
- include others and solve disagreements fairly
- avoid joining in with hurtful behaviour
- use respectful words to challenge unkind actions
- support someone who may be feeling unsafe or left out
seek help from a trusted adult when needed
A highlight of our learning has been using finger puppets to bring everyday scenarios to life along with helping ‘Ringo and Bingo’ the identical twins learn these valuable skills. Working with a partner, students practised positive responses such as inviting others to join in, resolving conflicts respectfully and supporting a friend who was feeling excluded. Rather than acting out unkind behaviour, students focused on demonstrating the respectful choices they could make instead, building both confidence and problem-solving skills in a safe and engaging way.

MATHEMATICS
MENTAL STRATEGIES WE HAVE BEEN FOCUSING ON FOR WEEK 1 & 2 of TERM 3 AT SFS!
The strategies children have focused on over the last two weeks are listed below, long with an explanation of the strategy and simple ways you can practice these at home.

| Foundation | Forward number word sequence by ones within the range 0-30 -Start at 0 and count forwards by 1s to 30 -Can you start at any number between 0-30 and count forwards by 1’s beyond 30. |
| Year 1 | Counting forwards and backwards by 10’s within the range 0-130 (starting from any number) At this age many children can confidently count backwards and forwards by 10s from 0-100 and 100-0. The challenge is then for them to be able to do so starting at any number. This requires them to recognise that a pattern also exists when they are not starting from a decuple (e.g. 10,20,20,40). Practice this mental strategy at home by asking a family member to call out a number between 0-130 and then practice counting backwards or forwards either orally or by recording the counting sequence on paper. |
| Year 2 | Counting forwards by 10’s within the range 0- 1000 (starting from any number) -As a family member to choose a number between 0 -1000. Can you start at that number and count forwards by 10s. Practice doing this orally as well as recording the counting sequence on paper.

| Year 3 | Practice Multiplication & related Division Facts -2, 5 and 10 facts.

| Year 4 & 5 | Practice Multiplication & Division Facts to 10 x 10. Practice multiplication and division facts at home over the next 2 weeks. Can you write them out in 1 minute – can you automatically recall a fact asked by a family member. Can you explain the relationship between multiplication and division – how does this help you with improving your automatic recall of facts? |
| Year 6 | Count by fractions When counting by fractions identify which fraction you are counting with –halves, third, eights etc. Do this by looking at the denominator, even if the fraction is a mixed numeral. Once this has been identified you can then start counting up with the numerator. |

Learning and Teaching Leader (Literacy/Numeracy)
Year 3/4 Excursion to the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens
On Monday, 27 July, our Year 3/4 students visited the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens as part of their History and Change Unit of Inquiry. During the excursion, students learned about the Bunurong / Boon Wurrung People and their deep connection to Country.
Through hands-on activities, students discovered how First Nations Peoples made and used tools, hunted sustainably by using every part of the animals they caught, created paint from natural ochre, and used native plants for food and medicine. They even enjoyed tasting lemon myrtle tea!
The excursion was a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal culture, sustainable practices, and the enduring connection between First Nations Peoples and Country. It was a memorable day of learning and discovery.

Making Multiplication Visual
Students explored how arrays can be used to represent multiplication as equal groups arranged in rows and columns. To demonstrate their understanding, they created an Array City, designing buildings and features using arrays to represent multiplication facts and discovering that the order of the factors can change while the total remains the same.
History Detectives at Work
Students became History Detectives as they learned to identify and compare primary and secondary sources of history. Using historical photographs, event descriptions, and dates, they worked collaboratively to match and sequence significant moments in Australian history, with a particular focus on the important contributions and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and how recognition has changed over time.

LS2 Senior Team Teacher
LS2 Juniors: Making Patterns! 🔴🔵🔴🔵🔴🔵
This week in Maths, our Clinic 2 students have been having lots of fun exploring patterns! Using unifix blocks, counters, blocks and icy pole sticks, they have been creating, copying and continuing a range of repeating patterns.
Through these hands-on activities, students have been looking carefully for pattern rules, predicting what comes next and explaining their thinking to their classmates. Working with different materials has helped them build confidence while developing important math skills in an engaging way.
Our students have also created a Pattern Book where they created different colour and shape patterns and labelled them with their rules.
It has been wonderful to see students working together, sharing ideas and challenging themselves to create more complex patterns. We are so proud of the enthusiasm and creativity they have shown during our Maths Clinic sessions!
