Exciting time for showcasing talent

The Music Department has enjoyed a busy and exciting period of performances, workshops and opportunities for our students to develop their musical skills. On 31 August, our musicians took part in a Combined Bands Workshop with St Mary’s College, collaborating with fellow young musicians and sharing their passion for music. 

Our Junior Rock Band also brought plenty of energy to the Middle Years Assembly with a fantastic performance, while our Senior Rock Band, Atomic, proudly represented the College at the 2026 Southern Heat of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge. These experiences showcase the enthusiasm, talent and dedication of our students and highlight the wonderful opportunities available through the Music Department.

Combined Bands Workshop Day 

The Combined Bands Workshop for musicians in Grade 5 and Grade 6 was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with their counterparts at St Mary’s College. Throughout the day, the students rehearsed as a very large ensemble and had separate instrumental tutorials with our outstanding team of Music tutors. 

The Workshop Day concluded with a concert for students and families. The program included music from Jurassic Park, a piece that many Australians can relate to called Ozzie Mozzie, Shark Attack,  and a medley of the music of Queen. With nearly 200 musicians on stage, it was a powerful performance. Thank you to the amazing Music staff from St Mary’s College and our fantastic tutors for making the day possible.  

Middle Years Assembly

The Junior Rock Band gave another exciting performance at the recent Middle Years Assembly. The band demonstrated their versatility in adapting to performing without their vocalist who was on an excursion. The band gave an excellent performance of the AC/DC song, Jailbreak, which was enhanced by the work of Mr Bevan and his theatre crew who were able to add lighting and stage effects, to create the effect of a Rock Concert. 

Congratulations to Harry Imber, Jacob Lee, Samuel Skinner, Edward Hickey, and Gangul Wimalasena for their fantastic performance.

2026 Tasmanian Rock Challenge

Senior School band, Atomic, represented the College in the Southern Heat of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge.

Lucas Hay, Alex Hanstein, and Archer Gifford composed a song entitled, School Trip, which they performed at the competition. Unfortunately, the band was not selected for the Final Round this year, but Lucas, Alex, and Archer were outstanding representatives of the College both on and off the stage.

Senior School Choomalaka

As the end of Term 3 draws closer, we are approaching the annual Choomalaka Arts Festival. The Southern Aurora Stage Band will be performing this year. The band members will need some support from their families to look the part. Parents of Southern Aurora band students can expect to receive a broadcast outlining clothing details for the Choomalaka performance. We look forward to welcoming students and their families to Choomalaka 2026 on Friday 25 September.
