Term 3 Update

It has been a busy and positive few weeks at Lara Secondary College and one of the things that continues to impress is the extraordinary breadth and depth of opportunities that our young people are engaged in.

As you read through this edition of The College Times, you will see students participating and achieving across an enormous range of activities. Whether through our Rugby and Cricket Academies, sporting teams, student leadership, camps and excursions, cultural activities, international camps or the many other opportunities offered beyond the classroom, there is genuinely something for every student to become involved in and excel.

A special mention must go out to our Rugby teams this week – outstanding to see the Under 18 boys clinch the Schools State Championship for the first time and the girls come runner up. A huge well done to them. 

None of this happens without the commitment of our staff. These opportunities require teachers and support staff to give generously of their time because they understand the difference these experiences can make to young people. I want to acknowledge our staff for the energy and enthusiasm they continue to bring to our College.

Just as importantly, we continue to see a positive climate for learning across the school. Our expectations are simple: classrooms should be calm, orderly and purposeful places where teachers can teach and students can learn. We want our students to aim high, take pride in their work and understand that effort, persistence and a willingness to grow matters regardless of what career you would like to pursue. 

Over recent months, we have also placed a renewed focus on reducing rubbish around our College grounds and we are already seeing a noticeable improvement. I want to thank our students for responding so positively. Every second we don’t spend managing rubbish on the ground we re-invest back into better educational opportunities. 

This week we also farewell two valued members of our Health and Physical Education team, Mr Fennel and Mr Craddock. A huge thank you to them both for their contribution to Lara Secondary College and we wish them every success in the future.

At the same time, we welcome Mr Lavis and Mr Hicks who will be taking over their HAPE classes. I know our community will make them feel very welcome as they get to know their students and settle into life at Lara.

There is a lot happening at our College and much to celebrate. What stands out most is a community increasingly characterised by opportunity, positive relationships and high expectations. Thank you to our students, staff and families for the part you each play in continuing to make Lara Secondary College a great place to learn and grow.
