Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Inquiry: Students are encouraged to continue exploring science at home by trying simple experiments and investigations with their families. Home experiments provide a wonderful opportunity for students to practise following the scientific method, make observations, ask questions, and share their discoveries with others.
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: Working on general multiplication skills with the goal for automaticity of the facts up to x12
Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop:
For the next few weeks, students are planning and writing their own procedure texts by following the scientific method. They will apply features such as clear sequencing, imperative verbs, topic-specific vocabulary, headings, and detailed step-by-step instructions to communicate scientific investigations clearly and effectively. These skills will support students in presenting their experiments which are linked to our inquiry learning.
Mathematics:
Students have continued exploring fractions. We have begun simplifying fractions using factors. Students will use their understanding of adding fractions with the same denominator, to move into adding fractions with like denominators.
Inquiry: Students have had a strong focus on the scientific method and following these steps to carry out a well-executed experiment. Throughout the unit, students will reflect on how innovation has impacted society. They will also explore how scientific thinking supports problem-solving and drives future innovation.
