Congratulations Merlin Tzaros
Year 9 student Merlin Tzaros broke through for his first National Championship win over the April school holidays.
The Australian Grand Prix Triathlon (AGPT) series was a National series of three events, with competitions in Canberra in January (Super Sprint weekend), Gold Coast in March (Triple Mix event), and culminating in Port Adelaide in April (The Championship). All these events were run on very different courses and in varying race formats and enabled the nation’s best young triathletes in the country to gain experience racing at this level.
Merlin competed in all three race events in the Youth 13-15 year old male category. He competed well in Canberra and the Gold Coast but his ultimate race result was achieved on the weekend with his first National Championship win, in Port Adelaide.
It was a tight and technical course starting with a 400m swim, then a 15km ride and finishing with a 3km run. It was a very exciting race from start to finish, with Merlin edging out his fellow competitor from NSW in a thrilling sprint finish to take the win.
All of the athletes performed exceptionally well and hundreds of excited spectators lapped-up the action throughout the event. Merlin was lucky to score 3rd overall in the series standings which was a bonus. He had a fabulous experience, is so very grateful to his coach Nick (Peak Athlete Coaching), and can't wait for next season.
Congratulations Merlin on your outstanding achievement. You are an outstanding ambassador for Wangaratta High School, and an inspirational role model for everybody in our community.
