Aboriginal Education

AIME
When I first heard of this excursion I had no idea that people from the US were already at Wollongong University ready to meet an amazing amount of young indigenous kids.
We all got off the bus not knowing but hearing loud drums and screams of laughter, at this point I just thought the uni was throwing a celebration party then a lady with no shoes came up and asked for our attention she speciically said that people from the Bronx, Miami, Brooklyn and just a whole lot of people from over seas was here to meet us.
My first thought “boring” then she said find a partner or group so I set off on a mission to find someone I had never met. From this point I was searching for a personality click and I found myself many amazing people who were so friendly, out going, helpful and understanding. I am extremely proud of myself and everyone because I had one of the best experiences of my life so far and most definitely ready for the next AIME date.

Aboriginal Education at LIHS
On Wednesday 6/3/19, the Lake Illawarra High School ATSI community was proudly represented at the International Women’s Day celebration held at Wollongong Town Hall. Kyra Street, Akala Lawrence, Latoya Lawrence, Chelsea Perrin, Efrosini Kyriazopoulos, Jasmin Charles had prepared for their musical and dramatic performance for the 6 months leading up to the celebration. On the day, they performed a number of songs and a stage performance that told a cultural story about Mount Keira and the creation of the Five Islands. Along with Denise, the Lake Illawarra High School students were joined by some of their parents, Aboriginal Elders and students from Mount Warrigal Primary School, together they represented the local community proudly and enjoyed meeting and learning about a variety of other local cultural groups who also performed on the day. The girls would like to thank Denise & Mr Davison for their help and support to prepare for their performance and to parents and Elders who were able to join the girls on the day. It wonderful experience for everyone who was involved.
