Careers Information

Work Experience
Students in Year 10 are invited to participate in work experience during the last week of Term 1. Information has been discussed and distributed during careers lessons. This is a very worthwhile experience for all students to be involved in as it could open doors to further opportunities and build interest towards different careers.
At Lake Illawarra HS, students in Year 10 are able to do work experience again during the last week of Term 2 and 3, as well as in late Term 4. So, if students are keen to do more than one week to help finalise future planning it is possible. It is important that students are active to secure work experience as early as possible in order not to miss out on their first choice of location.
Edge Workshop
Monday 4th March was a fun and enjoyable experience for a selected group of students from Year 10 - 12. These students participated in the E.D.G.E workshop, which stands for Education, Deportment, Grooming and Employment. This session, co-ordinated by ex Lake Illawarra High School student, Sharna Dawson and her team, a barber, hairdresser and stylist, allowed students to experience through hands on activities how to be prepared for future interviews and learn how to impress possible employers.
Students were divided into groups of boys and girls and were guided on how to take care of their personal hygiene and beauty, experiment with hairstyles and know how to knot business ties. Some of the boys took up the opportunity to get a new hairstyle!
These practical and fun activities supported the need for students to be aware of their public image in which they present and realise how possible employers will be taking notice of this image both at interview and in their personal social media. All students were well-behaved excellent participants and learnt practical and useful information.
White Card Course
Twenty students successfully completed their White Card course here at Lake Illawarra High School this term. Mr Cohen has the training to teach students and has been doing this for some time at Lake Illawarra High School. The information and understanding of safety in the workplace was excellent and presented in a practical manner with many examples. Due to Mr Cohen’s expertise, the school can run this course and it is often prized by many students. Just a reminder, students wishing to do work experience on any construction site or trade, are required to have completed a qualified face to face WHS course. This allows the student to be covered by the NSW Dept of Education insurance while on work experience.
Lake Illawarra High Careers Website
A useful website that is used by Year 10 -12 students to access current information to assist in future directions, career planning, general information, job vacancies and newsletters. Facebook is also added to this website so students can like the page and get prompts for job vacancies, special events and current careers information. All caregivers are also welcome to access the site and find useful information. The link is lakeillawarrahighcareers.com or you can simply type in Lake Illawarra High Careers in any search engine.
HIA Apprenticeship Information Session
A long day of information and building on our networks happened with a small crew of interested Year 11 students who attended the first HIA Apprenticeship Information Session at Shellharbour Club. The boys were fantastic representatives of Lake Illawarra High School and were a pleasure to take on the excursion. Mr Dunkerley and I were equally surprised that one of the employers in the Q&A section was ex-Lake Illawarra High School student John Geale. It was great talking to John and reconnecting to build future prospects for our school.
It is always a pleasure to take up opportunities and help students find their pathways to future careers. Having the new school buses made this excursion possible and we now have more flexibility and opportunity to travel to more industry and careers visits in the local area.
