Science News
The Science faculty is excited to introduce the new STEM programs now embedded within Stage 4 Science classes (Years 7 and 8). Students will continue to engage with Science curriculum outcomes, however, their learning will be regularly extended to incorporate additional elements of technology, engineering and mathematics. Through these STEM and project based learning units, students will also be provided with more opportunities to further develop 21st Century skills such as collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) programs are currently under construction, and these students will also have the opportunity to engage with STEM projects throughout the year. Projects will be posted throughout the year – we can’t wait to see what our students create!
Year 11 Visual Arts' Students Visit Sydney
Year 11 Visual Arts’ students recently visited Sydney to see and experience some of the readily accessible public art in the CBD and also, to visit two exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. After an early start and snoozing most of the way to Sydney, our first art stop was the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park, followed by a visit to St Mary’s Cathedral. Here, students marveled at the sheer scale of the interior and were able to clearly see the features and style of Gothic architecture.
A walk along Gallery Road to the art gallery saw more large public sculptures. At the gallery, we first saw was the Masters of Modern Art from the Hermitage exhibition. The Hermitage is a very famous, grand gallery situated in St Petersburg in Russia and a selection of iconic works from some of the most famous artists of the 20th Century comprised this fine exhibition. Following this, students visited Artexpress which is an exhibition featuring some of the best HSC works from 2018. This proved to be an inspirational exhibition as students saw many different forms of artmaking and the broad range of ideas and concepts that students addressed in their HSC artmaking. This knowledge will be invaluable as they work towards developing their own examination pieces for the 2020 HSC.
Heading to Circular Quay for lunch, we stopped to visit the site of NSW’s first Government House and Janet Laurence’s art installation Edge of the Trees that is constructed on the site. The work recognises the first tentative contact between Aboriginal people and the First Fleet and students were intrigued by old harbour piers that ‘talked to them’ in the local Eora language. After lunch we visited Harry Seidler’s Australia Square building and finally, Angel Place and Michael Hill’s auditory bird cage installation called Forgotten Songs. After looking at the grand architecture of Martin Place, we also paused for a moment to remember the horror of the incident that occurred at the Lindt café.
We had a very busy day, covered a lot of ground and saw a wide range of artworks. The students who participated were keen, eager to absorb as much as possible, took hundreds of photos and were outstanding ambassadors for our school. It was a pleasure to escort such a fine group of young people.
Technology & Applied Studies
The TAS faculty recently had the pleasure of hosting families for Lake Illawarra’s Expo night. With the help of students who volunteered their time, we created caramel popcorn, vanilla butterfly cupcakes and pikelets for our guests to enjoy. It was wonderful to showcase the TAS cooking area to our potential students and their families.

Our Year 7 students enjoyed discovering the techniques of cutting fruit using various methods while learning how to make fruit salad. They also got to enjoy tasting their creations afterwards.

National Day of Action
At Lake Illawarra High School we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.
You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.
We are including tips from Bullying. No Way! on what to do if your child talks to you about bullying. Parents know their children best and know the best way to tailor communication to their needs. Adapt these tips to what works for you and your child.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
- Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
- Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
- Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
- Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
- Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
- Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.
If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents. As well, please feel free to contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying.
Thanks for your support to make Lake Illawarra High School a great school for everyone.
