South West Head of the River Regatta

This is an annual Country Regatta which the John XXIII College Rowing club attends along with local country schools; Bunbury Catholic College and Bunbury Grammar. It is held on the beautiful Bunbury foreshore fronting the Bunbury Rowing Club who host this event.

What a way to end the boys summer rowing season and commence the girl’s season. It was a glorious weekend at Bunbury commencing with the family and rowers dinner on Saturday night, hosted by the John XXIII College Rowing Club, where 200 plus attendees enjoyed the balmy evening at the Bunbury rowing club foreshore. A relaxed and social evening for all, but early to bed as at daybreak the preparation for racing was to begin.

The day dawned glorious with a slight wind rippling on the river – excellent rowing conditions. The first race started with the bang of the starters gun and the crews were off. The JTC crew finished strongly – and started the Regatta the way our rowers wanted to finish, with many wins on the board. With our largest ever Bunbury regatta rowing contingent of 70 rowers we had an opportunity to do extremely well. And that we did with a swag of medals, winning the penultimate final Open Mixed Eight race and the prestigious Ronald Walter Prosser Cup, as well as the ergo competition and the overall club points competition and trophy.

It was a victorious Regatta for the JTC Rowing Team and so rewarding for the girls and the boys to row together. The camaraderie and support between the team members was terrific to see. With that and the support of the Bunbury Rowing Club who contributed boats and facilities, Bill Kaye Photography for the amazing photos, the coaches who kept the rowers on time and on track, the parents and friends who cheered and supported, and lastly the rowers themselves who competed so well and graciously accepted medals, all contributed to making the event one to remember and one not to be missed in future years. A special thanks goes to Rob Thomas for all his behind the scenes work organising the team and facilities for the Regatta, and his time spent coaching and motivating our rowers to do their best.

Most importantly, it was so rewarding just to see all the students together enjoying their time in Bunbury and rowing with such passion and commitment after many weeks of tough and early training mornings, having such a ball and savouring the added thrill of victory - which is something to be celebrated by us all.
