Pentecost Sunday
Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of Pentecost, also known as the 'birthday of the early Church'.
"Pentecost (Whitsunday), with Christmas and Easter, ranks among the great feasts of Christianity. It commemorates not only the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Disciples, but also the fruits and effects of that event: the completion of the work of redemption, the fullness of grace for the Church and its children, and the gift of faith for all nations."
Our Lady, Mary, Help of Christians
As Catholic Schools' Week celebrations occur this week, so too does the solemnity of the Patron Saint of Australia - Our Lady, Mary, Help of Christians.
The infant Church in Australia had a special reason for turning to Mary. In those early and mostly priestless days, it was largely the Rosary that kept the faith alive. Catholic Australia remained faithful to Mary, and was the first nation to choose her, under the title of Help of Christians, as Principal Patron.
