State Aerobics

Congratulations to Mariana, Lana and Holly who have been selected for the 2019 Aerobic Gymnastics state team for the upcoming nationals at the end of May. The girls will have two days of competition showing off all there hard work and new routines in front of a national stage at Melbourne Arena.

In addition to this, we are beyond excited to announce that one of our Aerobics groups has been selected to compete at the 2019 ANAC championships and represent Australia later this year. The group including Mariana, Holly, Jasmine, Lucy, Evelyn and Amanda will travel with the Australia team to Phoenix Arizona in late July to compete against some of the best teams in the world! We are extremely proud of all their hard work, and wish them the best of luck in America!

Calendar

Over the past fortnight our MGC teams have competed in a number of other Inter School events.

Year 8 Tennis – Regional finals

Our team competed out at Boroondara Tennis Centre and finished 2nd in their pool. This equaled their performance as a team in Year 7 and all 4 students demonstrated a high level of skill throughout the day. A big thank you to Ana Makridis and Lilian Spear (parents of MGC students) who looked after the team on the day with transport, coaching and team managing.

Year 7 Softball – Regional finals

From Victoria Fitzgerald (teacher/coach)

We had the toughest match first and in the bitter cold of Mill Park we went down to Viewbank 12-1. However, we improved tremendously in the second game to overcome Reservoir 18-3 with some great hitting and base running.

Everyone contributed to the team and there were some standout performances from first-timers including girls who had a go at the high pressure jobs of pitching and catching. I was really impressed to see the progress that our team had made in such a short space of time with limited opportunities to practice.

Year 9 and 10 Volleyball – Regional Finals

The group of 8 students travelled to Darebin Community Sports Centre to take on the best Volleyball teams from the Northern Metro Region. We gave ourselves a chance to make the final after being drawn in a different pool to Eltham HS (known for their volleyball success). The match against Northcote was going to determine the winner of the pool. We came out firing in the first set and found ourselves 8 points ahead, forcing their shell-shocked coach to call a timeout. We continued to fight hard and took the 1st set much to Northcote’s surprise. Unfortunately for us, they came out in the 2nd set with a much more aggressive game plan and won the 2nd set before we even realised. The 3rd set was locked at 8-all (first to 15) but their tall players were just too strong for us and we lost the 3rd set as well. While disappointed, the team were buoyed by the ease in which they won their other 2 matches and are already looking forward to getting some revenge in 2020.

Year 9 and 10 Softball – Regional Finals

The softball team made it to the Regional finals by default, with no opposition at Division Level. Putting together a team became a bit of a challenge with some late injuries and assessment requirements at school. The 12 students who represented the school had a lot of fun against some very talented opposition. While we did not challenge for the win in the 3 games we played, the students enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot from watching the girls from Montmorency and Gladstone Park battle it out. Thanks to Charlotte Fu for coaching the team.

Athletics – Division Carnival

As we finish off the Swimming season, we turned out eyes to the Track and Field season, which starts a bit early in the year in our Division. As mentioned to the athletes, the aim for the team was to get as many students qualified for September’s Regional Finals as possible. Filling as many events as possible means we can challenge for the overall Schools Aggregate pennant.

All our athletes ran, jumped and threw to the best of their abilities on a slightly wet and windy day at Collingwood Athletics track. A highlight was the number of junior students who competed in age groups much older than they are and still managed to finish in the top 2 placings, earning regional qualification.

With schools such as Ilim College, Coburg and Richmond HS growing each year, the competition is becoming much tougher in our Division and subsequently we did not qualify in as many events as we usually do. This is not at all to do with a decline in our performance but more due to the other schools increasing their efforts to match the high standards set by MGC over the past 10 years.

Some MGC records that were broken on the day:

  • Sunshine Spencer – 17yrs 800m – 2:39.50
  • Tahj Seelig-Schattner – 17yrs High Jump – 1.55m
  • Alina Ivanova – 13yrs 200m – 17.02s
  • Ella Doherty – 16yrs 200m – 16.98s
  • Ella Doherty – 16yrs 400m – 1:04.30

A big thank you to Sylvan Dorney and Tom Bond who helped coach and manage the athletes on the day. Also thanks to Sylvia Shaw (parent of Manon Shaw) who donated to the team their families old athletics spikes. The students benefited greatly from this and were very appreciative of her generous contribution to the team.
