SWPBS

The week 5 & 6 focus for SWPBS has been on Responsibility - Be honest and take ownership of my actions.

Responsibility means being honest, making good choices, and taking ownership of our actions, even when mistakes happen. At school and at home, responsible people understand that their words and actions affect others. They are truthful, follow through with tasks, and try to make things right if something goes wrong. Learning to take responsibility helps children build trust, develop independence, and become respectful members of their community. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, but showing responsibility means learning from them and doing our best to improve.

Strategies parents can use at home:

  • Encourage children to admit mistakes calmly and honestly without fear of harsh reactions

  • Give children small responsibilities, such as packing their school bag or lunch box, helping with chores around the house, etc.

  • Praise effort, honesty, and accountability rather than perfection

  • Model responsible behaviour by following through on commitments and apologising when needed

  • Help children reflect on their choices by asking questions like “What could you do differently next time?”

  •  Encourage problem-solving and making things right after mistakes or disagreements
