News from the Kitchen Garden

An update from the garden...

It is Springtime so there is a lot of growth happening outside. Both edible growth and weeds!

So far this term we have had 6E, 6S, 3B, 3K, 1V, and 1M visit the garden for their Term 4 Garden Session.

Out near the 1K and 1V classrooms, you can see a lot of green growth happening. The really exciting part is happening in the dirt. In a couple of months, we may be able to start searching through some of the dirt to find...POTATOES!

There have been a lot of seeds going into pots to create our own seedlings to plant out later. We have started:

  • Tomatoes

  • Corn

  • Cucumber

  • Capsicum

  • Eggplant

  • Zucchini

  • Watermelon

We have also planted quite a lot of seedlings into the garden beds. 6S and 1V helped to plant out heaps of Corn, Tomato, and Sweet Peas.

We have also directly sowed 3 rows of seeds into one of the garden beds next to Gumbuya. We have 2 rows of beetroot seeds and 1 row of carrot seeds. Thank you to 3K who all contributed to this!

To prepare the garden beds that just received the new seedlings, all the classes have been helping to prepare the soil. We did this by digging into the soil, breaking it up, turning it over, adding compost and cow manure to mix through, and watering it all in. It was a lot of physical work shoveling, transporting by wheelbarrow, filling watering cans and carrying them. Hopefully this hard work will result in a large harvest!

It has been a nice start to Term 4 in the garden. I just want to remind anyone that you are welcome to volunteer for the Garden sessions if you can, and you would like to. We love having visitors of any ability, you can be a beginner, and it is no problem at all! If you are interested, check the timetable and fill out the form below:

Kitchen is Back!!

We’re excited to have our Kitchen Program back up and running now that Vera has returned! The students have loved getting back into the kitchen, preparing food, building their skills and, of course, enjoying the delicious results.

The program provides a wonderful opportunity for students to develop practical life skills, work together, follow instructions and build confidence in the kitchen. It’s great to see this much-loved program back as part of our learning at Altona Green.

A big welcome back to Vera, and a huge thank you to our volunteers who help make the program possible. We’re always grateful for the time and support our families give to our school, and we’d love to welcome some new volunteers to the kitchen team. If you’re interested in getting involved, please get in touch.

Please see the recipes below and get your kids to help make dinner!
