Information and Reminders
2027 Prep Transition #3 – This Wednesday
Our 2027 Preps will be joining us for their third transition session this Wednesday. Like last time, the session will run for the first two hours of the school day, before our current Preps return to their usual classrooms after recess.
During this time, our current Preps will head to the BER and spend the morning with their Grade 6 buddies, participating in learning activities connected to our CBL and mentor text learning.
Important arrival information: On Wednesday morning, students will need to take their school bag straight to the BER and line up there. They will be met by their Grade 6 buddies and the Grade 6 teachers. We will talk to students about this at school, but we ask that parents please remind their child about the different morning routine before they arrive on Wednesday.
After recess, students will return to their usual classrooms and continue their normal school day.

*Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.
Phonics and reading
Students will expand on their learning about long vowels by exploring words that end in -ce and -ge. They will learn that ce can make the /s/ sound, as in mice, and ge can make the /j/ sound, as in cage. Students will practise reading and spelling words containing these patterns and use their new knowledge to write simple sentences. They will also continue reviewing the long vowel patterns they have learnt, strengthening their confidence in recognising and using these patterns in their reading and writing.
What can you do at home?
• Support your child to read the decodable book and/or UFLI text in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.
• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.
•Review the letter names and sounds for all letters of the alphabet. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.” Ask your child if they can show you the cued articulation for the sounds.
•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet).
• Work through the optional UFLI pages.

Literature: reading responses and writing
Students will explore rainbows through both non-fiction and fiction texts. They will learn how rainbows are formed and discover the answer to an important question that many of them are wondering about: Is there really a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow?! Students will then enjoy the fictional text Raindrops to Rainbows, exploring the rhyming words and adjectives used throughout the story to make the writing more engaging and descriptive.
Students will explore rainbow writing, using the colours of the rainbow to build descriptive noun phrases. They will choose a noun and add an adjective for each colour, creating fun and imaginative descriptions, such as a sweet strawberry or a juicy orange.
Students will also continue to develop their handwriting skills using their Sky, Grass, Ground books, with a focus on correct letter formation, size and placement.
What can you do at home?
•Encourage your child to write about things they are interested in - a picture, a favourite animal, something they did that day or a story they have imagined. Encourage them to sound out words using the sounds they know and have a go at spelling independently.
Maths
Students will continue developing their understanding of place value as they work with numbers up to 100. They will practise making groups of ten and leftover ones by bundling materials and using sticks of 10 Unifix cubes. Students will also learn to read, say and write two-digit numbers, represent them using concrete materials, and strengthen their counting skills as they work towards counting to 100.
What can you do at home?
•Use Lego, blocks or straws to make groups of 10, then add extra ones. Ask your child to explain how many tens and ones they have made (e.g. 24 is 2 groups of 10 and 4 ones).
•Count forwards and backwards to 100 together. Choose two-digit numbers for your child to read, say and write, then represent them using groups of 10 and leftover ones.
CBL
Students will continue tracking the weather in their Weather Watchers journals. They will use weather-specific vocabulary to observe and describe what the day looks and feels like, helping them record their observations and notice how the weather changes over time.
Wellbeing
SWPBS
As we slowly approach the end of the term, we know that students can become tired after a busy year of learning and growing. This can sometimes make it harder to listen carefully and follow instructions. Our SWPBS focus continues to be Be Safe – Being Safe in All Settings and Stopping When Asked To. Students will practise listening carefully, following safety instructions and stopping their actions when asked. These skills are important for preventing accidents and ensuring everyone can learn and play safely.
Respectful Relationships
Students will explore what to do when they witness negative behaviour. They will learn how to recognise when someone is being treated unfairly, consider safe ways to support others, and understand the importance of seeking help from a trusted adult when needed.
