Auslan

Grade 1 & 2

This week in Auslan, students will explore storytelling through the signed story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students will learn key vocabulary and watch closely for facial expressions, movement and actions that help bring an Auslan story to life. Grade 1 students will respond by illustrating a favourite character, while Grade 2 students will sequence key events from the story.

Grade 3 & 4

This week, students will watch the Auslan story Beware! and practise identifying important information from a signed text. They will develop their understanding of WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY questions and use these to discuss the characters and events in the story. Students will then begin planning their own retelling by selecting and sequencing important scenes.

Grade 5 & 6

This week, students will investigate how translating between English and Auslan is about meaning rather than translating word-for-word. They will compare English and Auslan sentence structures and explore how facial expression and other non-manual features contribute information that may need to be interpreted. Students will apply these skills by watching a signed story and attempting to translate sections between Auslan and English.

STEM

Grade 1 and 2

Students will explore mixtures that change over time and investigate the process of dissolving. They will experiment with combining materials such as sugar and water, as well as making jelly using gelatine or agar, to observe how materials change when mixed. Students will make predictions, observe changes and compare how different materials behave when combined.

Grade 3 and 4

Students will construct a prototype of the object or structure they designed last week. They will select suitable materials based on their properties and explain why these materials are appropriate for their intended purpose. Students will consider the benefits and limitations of their material choices, including their environmental impact, as they bring their designs to life.

Grade 5 and 6

Students will investigate how recyclable materials, such as metals and plastics, are reclaimed and transformed into new products by tracing the journey of a plasitc bottle or metal can. They will create a flow chart, comic, or other method of storytelling to explore how metals are sorted, melted and reshaped, and how plastics can be sorted, shredded, melted and remoulded into new items. Students will identify the reversible changes involved in these processes and consider how recycling reduces waste, conserves resources and supports a more sustainable future.

Christmas Card Fundraiser

During Term 3, students across the school created a Christmas artwork to feature on their very own set of Christmas cards!

Through Crazy Camel Fundraisers, families can purchase cards featuring their child’s artwork to share with friends and family. All funds raised will support the Art program at Wonga Park Primary School.

So far we have had 115 orders raising over $2000! Amazing!

Orders will close on Friday October 30th. They will be delivered to the school in the following weeks ready for collection. If you have any problems with viewing or ordering your child's cards, please contact the office.

Community Caterpillar

Some of your may have already met this very friendly caterpillar up at the Wonga Park Shops. A local family who's daughters used to attend our school have set it up and would love for him to be 'fed' with more gorgeous rock creations! Check it out and be inspired to make your own at home to add to his body!

In the classroom this week

Prep students will be collaging ice-creams practising skills such as tracing, cutting, composition and colour choice.

Grade 1 and 2 students will be creating an artwork based on the magic rose in Beauty and the Beast. Using metallic paper, they will work on their fine motor skills of scrunching small balls of paper to create a 3D effect on the lines of the rose.

Grade 3 and 4 students will be painting their ice-cream construction, focussing on tinting a colour of their choice into 2 or 3 lighter shades.

Grade 5 students will be felting a Christmas tree ornament using a felting needle and wool tops.

Grade 6 students will continue to work on their Graduation portrait, painting the reverse side of their acetate sheet and practising techniques on the gelli plate to print their background.

Performing Arts

Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students are continuing their preparations for Beauty and the Beast JR. This week, students will focus on finding their positions on stage and learning how their songs and choreography fit into full runs of the show. They will practise moving on and off stage, following cues and performing together as part of the larger production.

Grade 3/4 students are continuing their Dance unit, building on their understanding of the elements of dance. This week, students will explore relationships in dance, focusing on how dancers move and interact with one another and use the space around them. They will combine this with their previous learning about space, time and dynamics to create and refine movement sequences in small groups.

Grade 5 students are continuing their Dance unit, focusing on how movement can be developed and performed with others. This week, students will explore unison, canon and mirroring, experimenting with performing movements at the same time, at different times and as reflections of one another. They will apply these techniques to create short movement sequences with their peers.

Grade 6 students are continuing their creative projects, with most groups now moving from planning into the creation stage. Students are beginning to bring their ideas to life through Drama, Music and/or Dance, experimenting with different creative choices, collaborating with others and refining their work as their projects take shape.
