100 Years

FROM THE ARCHIVES #01 | The Ice Skating Club

As we look ahead to celebrating 100 years of Glen Innes High School in 2027, we’re beginning to uncover some wonderful pieces of our school’s history.

We have recently been very fortunate to receive the first edition of The Eehrindian, published in June 1926, along with this incredible photograph of staff from the era.

And naturally, one of the first things to catch our attention was… the Ice Skating Club.

Apparently the club had a “rosy future” ahead of it, there was just one small problem. The school didn't actually have a pond. 

Not to be discouraged, the writer suggested that an “unbroken sheet of ice between the Manse and the church” might do the trick!

We’re not quite sure what became of the ice skating club, but almost 100 years later, we absolutely admire their optimism.

This is the first of our From the Archives series as we journey towards our centenary in 2027. We can’t wait to share more photographs, memories and little pieces of GIHS history along the way.
