Teaching and Learning

In Numeracy this term, students are continuing to develop their number sense across all year levels. A strong focus remains on building mathematical fluency through regular practise, while applying this knowledge to a range of engaging, open-ended problem-solving tasks. These learning experiences encourage students to think critically, explain their reasoning and apply mathematical concepts in meaningful contexts.

We use a variety of hands-on materials and games to support students' learning. The games below have been introduced in class and are a great way for the whole family to get involved while reinforcing important maths skills at home. 

Foundation - Year 2

Which is Bigger? 

Concepts covered: Counting, numeral recognition, comparing Equipment: Counters/tokens, playing cards, tens frame 

Good questions to ask while playing:

“Which number do you think is bigger?”

“How could you check?”

Year 3 and 4

Chocolate Chip Cookies 

Concepts covered: Multiplication, addition, probability, estimation 

Equipment: six-sided dice, paper and pens 

Good questions to ask while playing: 

"Why did you decide to place __ in that row?’ 

“Explain to me how you got __?” 

“Who do you think has more chocolate chips? Why?” 

"Which two numbers are you going to add up first? Why?"

Year 5/6 

Strike!

Concepts covered: Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

Equipment: Deck of playing cards, paper and pens

Good questions to ask while playing:

“What number are you trying to make now? Why?"

“Explain to me how you got __?”

“Can you make __ using multiplication/subtraction etc.?” (i.e. offer suggestions when students need help but DON’T tell them how to arrive at a number.)

“What would you do differently next time you played?”
