Literacy

Once

'In Once by Morris Gleitzman, ten-year-old Felix leaves an orphanage to find his parents in war-torn Poland. With danger around every corner, his journey reveals a world far different from the one he imagined. Can hope and friendship help him survive?'

Throughout our Literacy unit, students are learning all about World War 2, while reading our novel 'Once' students are participating in discussions about the importance of learning about history. It has been great to witness and listen to the mature conversations our students are having.

They have been working hard on their information reports about Poland with many students almost ready to write their conclusions to sum up everything they have learnt about the wonderful country.

Morphology

This term we started Unit 2, where students have been learning new morphemes. Last week the root words we focussed on were 'mand - to order' and 'man

 - hand. This week we are focussing on 'vis/vis(e)/vid(e) - to see' where the students are creating very interesting sentences to show they understand the meaning of the morphemes.

Integrated Studies

Wildlife Warriors.

Throughout this unit, students will learn about animal adaptations that enable them to survive in their habitats. They will explore different environmental and human impacts that threaten an animal's ability to survive and that lead to the endangerment of some species. Students will act as wildlife warriors, considering ways to support the survival of different animals through sustainable actions. They will learn about the importance of different animals to First Nations Australians and consider how cultural burning can support the life of animals and their habitats. Students will research an endangered animal and present their findings at the Conservation Conference to raise awareness about their selected animal's plight.

We can't wait to read all about the different endangered animals and how to help protect them towards the end of the term!

Numeracy

Big Idea 10

BIG IDEA STATEMENT:

VARIABLE: Mathematical situations and structures can be translated and represented abstractly using variables, expressions, and equations.

After post testing the students on Big Idea 9 last week, we have moved on to Big Idea 10! This week throughout Numeracy, students have learnt about highest common factors and lowest common multiples and have used a factor tree to help them show their understanding.

They have also started to learn about grid reference systems and are able to explain the importance of where items are placed.
