Assistant Principals' Report

Term 1 Learning Expo
Thank you to all the parents who attended our first Primary Years Learning Expo last week. We were impressed with the learning students shared and the pride they demonstrated when talking about what they had done in their classrooms this term.
Term 2 Parent & Teacher Interviews
Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held online via WebEx on Monday 27th April, between 9:00am and 4:00pm. This will be a variation to the school day, classes will not run, however, students are expected to attend the Parent/Teacher interview. Bookings are now open via Compass and will close Wednesday 22nd April, at 3.00pm. OSHC will be running on this day for those who require this service.
Supporting Safe and Healthy Technology Use Over the School Holidays
As we approach the school holidays, many families will notice an increase in screen time as children enjoy games, videos, and digital connections at home. While technology can support learning, creativity and social interaction, clear expectations and shared boundaries are key to helping children stay safe and balanced online, particularly during extended breaks from school.
Creating a Family Technology Plan
One helpful resource for families is the Family Technology Plan from the Playing IT Safe initiative. This free, interactive tool supports parents, carers and children to talk together about how digital devices are used at home. Through play‑based discussion, families can agree on simple rules around screen time, where devices can be used, and what to do if something online feels unsafe.
The Family Technology Plan encourages families to:
- Set clear and age‑appropriate expectations for device use
- Identify screen‑free times and spaces (such as during meals or before bedtime)
- Discuss safe behaviours, including asking for help from a trusted adult
- Support children to make good digital choices and develop positive habits early
These conversations help create a shared understanding between children and adults, rather than rules being imposed, which the eSafety Commissioner identifies as an important factor in building children’s self‑regulation and online safety skills.

Term 1 House Competition
We would like to congratulate McGrath House for winning this term’s Primary Years House Points Competition. McGrath House finished the term with 2,465 house points, with Chang House and Stynes House coming in second and third place, not far behind.
McGrath House celebrated yesterday, Wednesday 1st April, by wearing their McGrath Hazel Glen House top or a splash of pink. Students in McGrath House also had the opportunity to receive a free Zooper Dooper at lunchtime.
We would also like to congratulate all Primary Years students for the positive behaviour they have demonstrated throughout the term. Collectively, the Primary Years earned 2,553 positive chronicles, equating to 12,765 house points, for consistently demonstrating our expected behaviours.
We would also like to recognise the following students who had the highest house points in their houses. These students will have an opportunity to attend a lunch with all the house leaders and the primary years principal team.

Classroom Helpers
A big thank you to the parents who participated in the Classroom Helpers Training that was offered in Week 8. Ms Frangos and Mrs Ralph talked about our literacy programs and how to work with small groups and individual students in the classroom.
Classroom teachers will be sending out an expression of interest for parents to assist in the classroom from the beginning of next term.
To help in our Primary Years classrooms, parents must:
- Hold a current Working with Children Check (WCC)
- Have completed a classroom helper training session
- Sign a confidentiality form
We look forward to having parents work with us and support students in the classrooms.
Hazel Glen College: Sports Update
Purple Power: A Stellar Term on the Cricket Pitch!
It has been an action-packed term for our Year 6 Purple Cricket Teams, and we couldn't be prouder of the way our students represented Hazel Glen College. Whether batting, bowling, or fielding, our cricketers showcased exceptional talent and, more importantly, a commitment to our core College values.
Throughout the district competition, every student displayed Respect for their opponents and officials, took Responsibility for their roles within the team, and showed incredible Resilience when the games got tight.
Girls Team: A Gritty Second-Place Finish
Our Girls Purple Team had a sensational run this term. Their improvement in skill and tactical awareness from the first training session to the final match was a joy to watch.
The girls were a dominant force, winning all but one of their games. Their teamwork and encouragement of one another led them to a fantastic second-place finish in the district. Congratulations to the team for such a high-achieving season and for competing with such a positive spirit!
Boys Team: Undefeated District Champions!
The Boys Purple Team put on a clinical display of cricket this term, remaining undefeated across every single match. Their hard work at training translated into sharp fielding and powerful batting displays on game days.
By finishing at the top of the district, the boys have officially earned their spot to progress through to the Division finals. We wish them the best of luck as they move forward to represent Hazel Glen at the next level. Keep up that momentum, boys!
It wasn't just about the scoreboard this term; it was about the growth in character and the way our students supported each other through every over. That is the true HGC spirit.
A huge thank you to the teachers and parents who supported the teams this term. We look forward to seeing our boys compete in the upcoming Division matches!
Go Hazel Glen!
