Year Two Team: Drew (Leader), Bec, Ella, Lisa & Trang
We are looking forward to welcoming back our Grade 2 students and watching them build on the strong foundations established in Term 1. The Grade 2 team have been very impressed with the students’ application of our focus value of Belonging, as well as their ongoing demonstration of our school values of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility.
In Term 2, students will continue to strengthen their understanding of these values, with a particular focus on Respect. This will be explored through classroom learning, discussions, and everyday interactions, supporting students to build positive relationships and contribute to a supportive learning environment.
This term literacy homework will be the continued reading fluency practise through home readers. For numeracy students can access Essential Assessment at home to continue practicing their foundational skills. We look forward to welcoming our parent helpers into the classroom this term. Each teacher will be in touch shortly with those who expressed interest and have completed the induction process.
Numeracy
In Mathematics, through our Daily Review, Quick teach and explicit instruction, students will consolidate their understanding of place value, with a focus on comparing, ordering, and reading three- and four-digit numbers. In Term 2, students will develop their skills in addition and subtraction, with a particular emphasis on using formal written methods, including subtraction with regrouping. They will continue to build fluency with number facts to support efficient problem-solving. Multiplication concepts will be introduced through equal groups and arrays, supporting students to build a strong foundation in early multiplicative thinking, including understanding the commutative property of multiplication. Students will explore time, focusing on telling the time to the nearest minute and understanding durations, as well as applying their knowledge in real-life contexts. In measurement, students will engage with length and capacity, using informal and formal units to measure, compare, and solve problems. In geometry, students will extend their knowledge of 2D shapes and develop their understanding of position and spatial awareness. Ongoing consolidation, formative assessment, and opportunities for review and extension will support students in strengthening their understanding. Practising skills such as reading the time, comparing numbers, and measuring objects at home can further support students in seeing how Mathematics is used in everyday life.
Literacy
The Little Learners Love Literacy program will continue in Term 2, with many students progressing into new stages of the program. There will be an ongoing focus on developing skills in decoding, fluency, and comprehension. As students engage with increasingly complex texts, including more advanced digraphs and graphemes, they may study the same text over a two-week period. As a result, students may not always bring a Little Learners text home each week. At times, home reading will be supplemented with fluency texts, which should be read regularly to support confidence and accuracy. Students are also encouraged to continue reading a variety of novels and storybooks at home
Through explicit instruction and daily practice, students will continue to develop their knowledge of well-formed sentences by learning new vocabulary, formatting techniques and adding detail to sentences by using adjectives and adverbs. In Term 2 students will explore the genre of narrative. They will learn to implement the 5 W’s (Who, What, Where, When, and Why) in sentences, understand the importance of beginning, middle and end structures in narratives, and practise effective writing processes by drafting, editing, revising, and publishing their work. The genre of information text writing will also be practised with the Grade 2’s Unit of Work. Handwriting and spelling will continue to be a regular focus throughout Term 2. Students will participate in paired reading activities regularly, where they will read aloud with partners using a Little Learners Fluency Fun texts. This will provide students with opportunities to give feedback to their peers in a constructive and supportive environment.
Knowledge
In Term 2, students will explore the inquiry topic ‘What Makes a Place Important?’, focusing on significant places within our local community. We will explore what makes a place important, why certain locations are valued, and how they connect to people and history. Students will investigate Whitten Oval and Footscray Drill Hall, learning about their historical significance and role in the community. Students will develop their inquiry skills by asking questions, making observations, and preparing for excursions. The Grade 2 cohort will visit Whitten Oval and the Footscray Drill Hall to support their understanding of how these places have changed over time and why they are important to the community. Students will explore similarities and differences between past and present features of these sites and reflect on their learning through discussions and written responses. This will support their understanding of how communities change over time. As part of the unit, students will create a poster presentation to share what they have learnt about the history and importance of Whitten Oval. Throughout Term 2, students will continue to learn about respectful relationships where we will look at building positive relationships, stress management, positive gender relations, help seeking and consent.
