Maths

Maths is all around us and there are so many fun and easy ways to help your child see it in action! These activities will show them how maths is used in everyday life, making learning both meaningful and exciting: 

🔢 Play with Numbers – Count everyday objects like fruit, toys, or stairs as you go up and down. 

🛒 Shopping Challenges – Ask your child to help add up prices at the supermarket or compare product sizes. Get them to collect certain amounts of different objects (eg. collect 6 apples)

🎲 Games & Puzzles – Play board games like Monopoly, card games, or Sudoku to build problem-solving skills. Play “what am I spying?” instead of “I spy”: Describe a 3D object that you can see, one clue at a time, while the other people try to guess what it is. (e.g. My object is bigger than the TV. It has smooth sides that are rectangles. It is white.)

⏳ Time & Measurement Fun – Let them help with cooking, they can think about the timing, temperatures and measurements. Estimating and timing familiar activities with a stopwatch. 

🚗 Car Ride Maths – Plan routes on maps. Work out the total distances involved, but also talk about the traffic and whether one route would be faster. When on the highway, estimate how long it would take to get to the next town given the speed limit and distance. Spot 'special' numbers on license plates. Play variations of the game 'Spotto' - Yellow cars are worth 2 points and red cars are worth 1 point, see who ends up with the most points!

Reading - Phonics!

At Carlton Gardens Primary, we are working to ensure that every student is learning to read well, so that all students can all read for learning for the rest of their lives. Many families may have heard the Department of Education's recent statements about expectations for 'phonics' across all Victorian classrooms. Below is some reliable information for you that will help unpack this very important element of reading that is a feature in our early years classrooms.
