Budding Fashion Designers in Action
N12 and N6 recently put their creativity, planning, teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test during a Design and Technology challenge. Working in small groups, children were given newspapers, scissors and tape and were challenged to design and create an outfit that could be worn by one of their team members. Before they began, each group worked together to develop a plan and discuss their ideas.
Throughout the challenge, the children encountered plenty of obstacles, but they showed resilience as they adapted their designs, solved problems, and supported one another. As they created their designs some children applied their maths skills by measuring different body parts and estimating lengths to ensure their outfits would fit. Some children stepped into leadership roles, while others helped by gathering materials, sharing ideas and encouraging their teammates.
Newspapers were folded, twisted, rolled and taped into all sorts of creations. Many children learnt new construction skills as they experimented with different ways to manipulate the newspaper. The results were pretty impressive. We saw dresses, crowns, capes, shields, shoes, belts, necklaces and a range of imaginative fashion pieces come to life. There was plenty of mess but lots of excitement. It was wonderful to see such creativity and collaboration on display. We may even have a few budding fashion designers among us!
