Section 2: Find a workplace

How do I find a host workplace?

That first step - talking to people at a potential host workplace - can feel the hardest! It may take a few attempts to find a business or organisation that is able to take you at the time you are allocated for placement;

Helpful Hints

  • Research businesses in your area that have occupations you would like to explore
  • Consider the location and how you will get to and from work - bus? train?
  • Open Google Maps and look at where your closest public transport connections are, then search within the Map for businesses (e.g. type "Dentists") - it will show all of the Dentist business within the map area.

How do I approach the host workplace?

You could visit, phone or email them, or complete online forms/applications if that is what they require.

"Cold canvassing" is the process of directly approaching employers. Calling strangers isn't the easiest thing to do, and it can be tricky to remember all the information you need to convey. You may find the a telephone script helps you to structure your conversation - a sample script is provided in your Pastoral Care Stile lesson; Work Experience Lesson 2

Utilise your network of family, friends, neighbours, community members and contacts to identify potential areas of interest. e.g. Maybe your neighbour works for an organisation in an industry that interests you?

Learning more about what your friends, family and parents do in their occupations will help you to identify other potential opportunities.
