Maths Captains

Hi everyone, 

CHPS Maths Captains, Mateo, Max and Joaquin again, we have something very big to announce. We will be kicking off a Maths Competition!

Basically it’s where you will be faced with 2 problems, One for Foundation to Year 3, and one for Year 4 to 6. Each time we drop two new problems you will have two weeks to submit these problems, and of course, you MUST show your working out, if there’s one thing that this school prioritizes about Maths, it’s that you must show your working out, in this competition, if you don’t show your working out, we will take marks off your work. But without further ado, time for the problems.

The Foundation to Year 3 problem: 

Kangaroo Kira is preparing fruit baskets for a bushland party. She has 29 pieces of fruit in her pouch. Each basket can hold exactly 6 pieces of fruit. Kira fills as many full baskets as possible, then checks her pouch and finds she still has some loose fruit left over. She delivers 1 full basket to Koala Kiri, 2 full baskets to Wombat Wally and 1 full basket to Possum Poppy. After delivering the baskets, she looks at her pouch again. Here are the 

Questions: 

1. How many full baskets did Kira make from 29 pieces? 

2. After giving away the baskets, how many loose pieces of fruit are left in her pouch? 

3. If she wants to make one more full basket, how many more pieces does she need?

Time for the Year 4 to 6 problem: 

A school community wants to build a large triangular treehouse platform with a base exactly 6 metres and a vertical height of 4 metres. Heavy-duty wooden timber planks cost $35 per square metre to buy and install. The student council has raised a total budget of $320 for the timber, which they quickly realise is not enough to cover the whole floor. 

Your Task: Figure out what exact fraction of the treehouse floor can they afford to build with their current budget, and precisely how much more money must they raise to complete the entire structure? 

Show your full mathematical working out and write a detailed sentence explaining your final results.
