The week started with our hockey team having a great 5-0 win against St Patricks College in their second match of the Brisbane Schoolboys Hockey competition.

AIC Round 2 saw Marist travel to St Peters Lutheran College and Ambrose Treacy for an away fixture. Our 1st IV Tennis started the round playing under lights on Friday night. It was a great evening with high quality tennis being played, with all of the close games not going our way, unfortunately the 1st IV went down. 

On Saturday, our 1st XIII Rugby League had a dominant performance with a 52-4 win, with the team controlling the game from start to finish, applying constant pressure in both attack and defence.

The 1st V Basketball faced a strong St Peters team. With momentum constantly changing, the boys showed true determination and came away as victors with an impressive 85-69 win. 

This weekend we host St Patrick's College in our second last home game for the year and we would love to have your support across the day.

Code of Conduct for Players – Representing with Integrity

As we move through another busy sporting season, it is timely to reflect on the importance of the AIC Code of Behaviour for Players. Representing the College is a privilege that comes with responsibility - not only to your teammates and coaches, but to the wider school community and the AIC competition.

At the heart of the AIC is a commitment to inclusion, respect, and sportsmanship. Our players are expected to uphold these values in every setting - on the field, in the stands, online, and in our day-to-day conduct.

This means showing humility in victory and grace in defeat. It means treating opponents, officials, and teammates with respect, regardless of the result. It means avoiding behaviours that damage the integrity of the game, whether through unsportsmanlike conduct, poor language, or negative online commentary.

Punctuality, correct uniform, and preparation are all small actions that show pride in your team and school. A handshake after the game, acknowledging the opposition and officials, is not just tradition, it is a reflection of the respect we aim to show in all interactions.

Our College supports all students in striving for excellence. But excellence is not only measured in wins and losses, it is defined by how we play, how we behave, and how we represent our school. Let’s continue to get this right.

Student Achievements

U/12 State Hockey Championship

Tom Laherty (Year 7), Pat Thigood (Year 6), Nicholas Sheldon (Year 5) and Charlie Davis (Year 6) just won the schoolboy state championship for Met North. Pat was selected in the QLD team which goes to nationals in October in Newcastle.

U/15 National Hockey Championship

Damon Johnston and Luke Keir represented QLD at Nationals and finished 4th in an extremely close tournament, with Luke being named in the Australian U/15 team.

Round 2 of the Schoolboys Hockey Competition saw us take on St Patrick's College, with the team securing a convincing 5–0 victory.

Despite being without five regular players due to a range of commitments, the squad put together an excellent performance. This provided a fantastic opportunity for several Year 12 students to make their first appearance for the team. Our sincere thanks to Ky Campbell, Leo Piggot, Archer Altun and Cooper Matthews for stepping up and representing the College so well.

Fletcher Wessling continued his impressive start to the season, scoring two goals in just his second game for the team. Both goals came from excellent interceptions and demonstrated his attacking awareness. Matt Alvarez also scored twice, while Lincoln Stockwell capped off the performance with a well-taken goal to complete the 5–0 scoreline.

Congratulations to the entire team on a strong all-round performance.

Attention now turns to this Wednesday's clash against St Edmund's College. As a rematch of last year's Grand Final, the boys will be eager to produce another strong performance.

Finally, congratulations to all of the boys who represented Met North and Queensland at the National Championships last week. We look forward to seeing the experience they have gained continue to benefit the team throughout the season.

1st IV Recap

Last week, we ventured out to St Peters for what was expected to be the most challenging round of the season. Beginning Friday afternoon, the first two doubles matches didn’t go our way, with both pairings narrowly going down, but the close contests provided hope for the upcoming matches.

Unfortunately, the following doubles also slipped away. Despite a valiant come back displaying grit and determination from 1-4 down, Oscar and Tom just lost 4-6. The rough start put us down 0-4 leading into the singles, where big results would be needed to turn it around. Indy took on number one, going down despite keeping his level and intensity high. Oscar fought hard but lost 1-6 1-6, whilst I battled with my opponent, coming out with a 2-6 3-6 loss. Tom followed with another unfortunate loss, resulting in a 0-8 sweep.

Despite the profound loss on paper, the boys showed determination and impressive talent, but the strength of St Peters was just too much. This week, we face St Pats, who should again provide a close fight. We appreciate and thank those for the support we received on Friday afternoon, and urge as many of you to come down to the Marist courts this week for what promises to be a competitive match.

The boys were eager to challenge St Peters, last year's reigning champions. We started really well with both doubles at 3–3, but ultimately the relentless pressure of St Peters beat us in both. Unfortunately, we went down in the next two doubles as well, though Oscar and Tom fought back well from 0–3 down before losing 4–6.

Indy played a terrific match against a big hitter, with fantastic shot making from both players, and showed he is up for the challenge no matter the opponent. Oscar came up against one of the best 14-year-olds in the country, who recently represented Australia in Germany. Oscar stuck with him in the rallies and frustrated him, but his opponent's consistency ultimately proved too much. Will and Tom threw everything they had at their opponents, trying plenty of different tactics, but were eventually ground down.

Even though we lost on the day, it was a big improvement from the boys and a great experience against stronger opponents that we can take into our next match.

In the seconds, Ryan Mendes stood out as player of the day, blowing his opponent off the court with his colossal serve.

Congratulations to the 10As and 6Bs, who were the only teams to win on the day.

AIC Tennis Round 2: Marist vs St Peter's

Round 2 saw Marist take on St Peter's in another competitive morning of AIC tennis, with players across all grades showing plenty of determination, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the fixture.

The 1st IV came up against a strong St Peter's and were unable to find a way through, Despite the scoreline, the boys stuck to the task across every match with Indy and Oscar, Will and Tom all fighting hard in tough singles battles against quality opponents.

Our 2nd IV put in a much more competitive showing, narrowly going down. Ryan was the standout, combining with Isaac for an opening doubles win before backing it up with a strong singles victory. Toby and Hugh also got among the wins, closing out the doubles with a solid performance, while Hugh pushed his singles opponent all the way in a  tight three-setter that could have gone either way.

The 3rd IV faced a tough challenge against a strong St Peter's side, with several closely contested doubles matches highlighting the team's fighting spirit. Despite the overall result not going Marist's way, the boys continued to compete hard throughout the singles, with Will securing an impressive victory and the team never dropping their intensity until the final match was completed.

Our Year 7 B team also came up against quality opposition. Although the final scoreline favoured St Peter's, there were encouraging signs throughout the morning. Fraser and Miguel combined well in doubles, while Jovi and Charles produced a hard-fought doubles win to finish the day on a positive note. Every player continued to battle in their singles matches, gaining valuable match experience against strong opponents.

The Year 7 A team produced a determined performance with several tightly contested doubles matches to begin the morning. Leo and Jack claimed an important doubles victory, while Chase and Chandler pushed their opponents in a closely fought encounter. The boys continued to compete strongly in the singles, showing resilience and commitment despite the challenging opposition.

Our Year 9 teams were involved in two of the closest contests of the round. The first side went down 5-3 on sets in a 32-23 game margin, with Cooper the standout, winning his singles 6-1 and combining well with Quinton for a 4-1 doubles win, while Liam battled through a tiebreaker to take out singles 4, 7-6. Our year 9's pushed St Peter's all the way narrowly going down 5-3 on sets and just 31-28 on games. Hunter and Seve set the tone early with a 4-0 doubles win, Seve followed up with a strong 6-3 singles victory, and George and Brasco combined for another doubles win at 4-1. Both Brasco's and singles and the Hunter-Seve doubles went to tiebreakers, each decided by the narrowest of margins.

The Year 8 teams also had plenty to be proud of. One team went down 3 games to 5, with Rhys the standout performer of the morning, winning his singles to love and pairing with Will for a 4-1 doubles win, while Flynn and Arthur added another doubles victory. Hardy and Sam opened with their doubles win and Jarel and Harry grinding out a tight 4-3 doubles victory in a tiebreaker, even as the singles results went the other way.

Our Year 5's  also fronted up with plenty of fight, both sides going down 2 sets to 1 in tightly contested matches that bode well for these young players as they continue to develop.

Year 10 A team produced the strongest result of the round, defeating St Peter's 23 games to 16. Aarav and Jack combined for an early doubles win, and Aarav backed it with a dominant 6-1 singles victory. Charlie and Maverick were equally impressive in doubles, winning their second 4-1, while Maverick added a solid 6-4 win in singles. Charlie and Jack's singles matches were washed out by rain and recorded as ties under AIC procedure.

Our Year 10 B team had a tougher morning, going down 19-26 on games. Callum was a highlight, winning his singles 6-0, while Gabe pushed his opponent hard before going down 4-6. Callum and Roman were unlucky in a tight tiebreak. Roman's singles was washed out by rain and recorded as a tie.

Across all teams, the standard of tennis was high, and our players demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, teamwork and perseverance. While the results didn't fall entirely in Marist's favour, there were many positive performances to build on as the season continues.

Well done to all players for representing Marist with pride, and thank you to the coaches, parents and supporters who were on hand throughout the morning.

This is for Years 7 to 12 only.

Time: Monday - 3:30pm to (5:30pm-6:00pm) and Tuesday 3:30pm - 7:00pm

This tournament is a great chance to see where your level is at for those boys wanting to make the First IV or an A team in the future.

We're looking to put on a sausage sizzle (Tuesday only) for this event. If there are any parents who would love to volunteer for cooking duties please let me know.

On Tuesday, don't miss the Current 1st IV vs Old Boys IV that will begin at 3:30pm followed by a teacher's vs students match that will start at around 4:30pm. 

The final for the tournament will begin around 5:30-6pm.

Monday and Tuesday afternoon there will be no AIC coaching for all grades and no lessons.

Round 2 Results 

1st XIII Match Report - Brad Winchester – 1st XIII Coach

The 1st XIII travelled to St Peters determined to get our season back on track. The opening exchanges were physical, with St Peters bringing plenty of intensity and competing hard from the outset. Our boys responded well, remaining patient and composed to build momentum, taking a deserved 22–0 lead into half-time.

The second half began with a lapse in discipline and a number of unforced errors, but the team quickly regrouped and began playing the style of football we challenge them to produce each week. Their willingness to move the ball, support one another and play with energy saw them finish strongly, running out convincing 52–4 winners.

James Johnston was deservedly named Man of the Match after an outstanding all-round performance, highlighted by a brilliant 50-metre line break from the kick-off that set up a try. Other standout performers included Sania Elisala, Will Bagnall, Oli Brotherton and Couper Liddicoat, who all made significant contributions in a strong team performance.

Basketball

Marist Basketball teams enjoyed an excellent Round 2, recording 19 wins and 9 losses in a strong weekend of competition against St Peters Lutheran College, Ambrose Treacy College, Villanova College and St Laurence's College.

Our Senior teams led the way with impressive victories, including the 1st V (85–69), 2nd V (66–34), 3rd V (45–18) and 4th V (67–20), while the 11A and 11B teams also secured hard-fought wins. Across the middle year levels, the 10B, 9A, 9B, 9C, 8B, 8C, 8D, 7B, 7C and 7D teams all produced convincing performances.

The Year 5 and Year 6 teams continued to show great enthusiasm, with wins to 5A, 5D and 6C, while many other teams battled strongly against quality opposition. The friendly match between 5B and 5C was played in great spirit, with both teams demonstrating excellent teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the game.

Congratulations to all players, coaches, and families for their commitment and support throughout the weekend. The positive attitude, teamwork and sportsmanship displayed across every venue continues to reflect the Marist spirit both on and off the court. We look forward to another exciting round this weekend.

1st V - Round 2 vs St Peter’s College

Mr James Lymer - 1st V Coach

This week, the 1st V hit the road to take on a confident St Peter’s College, entering the contest undefeated after a shared opening-round victory.

We knew from tip off that this would be a gritty game. Peter’s handled the early pressure well and finished the first quarter with a narrow lead, setting the stage for a competitive battle. With several starters hitting early foul trouble, our bench responded well, bringing that well needed spark on the defensive end, regaining the lead heading into halftime. The second half saw the group continue to build on that momentum. Timely defensive stops, better tagging on the glass and playing with pace allowed us to gradually increase the margin. A more focussed final quarter capped off the team’s performance, with the boys running away to secure a gutsy 16-point victory. Their ability to stay poised when facing adversity speaks volumes about their character, never getting too high or too low, and adapting better as the game progressed.

Thank you to the parents, families and students who travelled to support the team. Sitting atop the AIC ladder, we hope to keep it rolling in the Round 3 clash against St Patrick’s College at 12:15pm. We look forward to seeing the Hive packed once again this Saturday as we aim to defend home court leading into the EKKA break.

Inter-House Track and Field Carnival | Ignatius 3-Peat

Congratulations to Ignatius House for following up their 2024 and 2025 successes with another fine House performance. Their strong and consistent performances, led by their collective team performance, three age champions, and an unwavering House spirit, helped them hold off second place Rush to be crowned the 2026 Inter-House Track and Field champions. Congratulations to all the other Houses for their spirited participation and for contributing to the overall success of the carnival.

I would like to thank the students for embracing the carnival with such enthusiasm. Whilst it was disjointed with the field constraints, their commitment to giving their best, having fun and cheering for their fellow Housemates created a fantastic atmosphere. 

At the heart of the carnival was the spirit of participation and enjoyment. The Championship and novelty events were designed to ensure that every student had the opportunity to get involved and contribute to their House's success. I commend all students for their positive mindset and willingness to step out of their comfort zones.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff members whose energy and support helped make this carnival an overwhelming success. Whether it was coordinating the activities, or providing guidance and encouragement to the students, our staff demonstrated their dedication to fostering a positive and engaging experience for all involved. I would like to thank them for their tireless efforts across the day.

Thanks to Mr Matt Millward from our Sports Administration team for the hard work behind the scenes to make the carnival a success. The work leading into the event is a huge contributor to the success of the Inter-House Carnival. Thanks also to Ms Margaret Canning and Mr Simon O’Hare their support as the scorers for the event. With so many results coming in quickly across the day and then throughout the beginning of Term 3, they did an incredible job.

Thanks to the many students who supported the staff across the day in various roles. Your contribution to the carnival is greatly appreciated and is a strong reflection of the culture we have here at the College.

Finally, a big thanks to Mrs Lisa Gleeson. Her work in assisting with the staffing of the event is greatly appreciated. From early morning catch ups to random phone calls, she is always happy to help find solutions.

Safety Notice | Hayden Oval

Attention all students / parents / visitors. 

Track and Field training (discus, shot put and javelin) has commenced on Hayden Oval for Term 3. 

At any time you are walking across Hayden Oval or wanting to enter the tennis courts area, please adhere to the following safety guidelines: Look for Bunting, Signs, and Witches Hats: These markers are placed to indicate restricted areas.

Safe Route: To move between the bus stop and tennis courts, please use the road up to the new primary building and the stairs closest to the tennis shed. Please do not walk across Hayden Oval. 

Your cooperation is essential in ensuring everyone's safety during training sessions. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Marist Track and Field | Sign On

Please go to Parent Orbit and see information regarding sign on. All students who wish to be involved in the Track and Field program are asked to sign up via the student café. Once your son/s have signed up all parents or caregivers MUST approve the signup via Parent Lounge and edit or update any medical details. 

This assists the College in organising the appropriate number of coaching staff and to deliver the necessary resources.

NOTE – If your son isn’t registered, you will NOT receive any information via the Parent Orbit regarding the Track and Field program, including schedules and relevant information.

Marist Track and Field | Camp (SAVE THE DATE)

The Track and Field Camp is a vital component of the team’s preparation for the AIC Championship. Over 2½ days, students will receive high-level coaching and mentoring from an exceptional team of specialists including National and Olympic-level coaches across various track and field disciplines.

Attendance at the camp is by invitation only and invitations will be sent to selected students in late August. Selection is based on a range of factors, including performance, attitude, attendance and team composition.

This camp provides an outstanding opportunity for students to refine their skills, build team camaraderie, and gain valuable insights from elite-level coaches as we prepare to defend both our AIC Secondary and AIC Primary Championship trophies.

NOTE – a small group of Year 6 students will be invited to attend the Friday session at UQ. This group will be made aware closer to the time.

Marist Track and Field | Sunday Sessions

For those students wanting to get a head start or start the season strongly, Mr Rob Martin will continue to run his usual Sunday sessions. Mr Martin has had exceptionally strong numbers attend the sessions as students prepare for up-coming Inter-House Carnival and AIC season. The Sunday sessions are an excellent introduction. We have some exceptional coaches leading these sessions, and creating an environment of learning and enjoyment. Some benefits include -

3. Improved repeat speed / conditioning.

Rugby Union

Marist Rugby Union | Met North Champions 

Congratulations to the five members of the Marist rugby union program who were recently crowned U14-15 State Champions following a tournament in Townsville.

Head Coach, Mr Chris Daykin; Team Manager, Mr Michael Abbott; and students Harvey Pye, Isaac Mastenbroek and Will Hutchinson were significant contributors to the undefeated run at the final. Plenty of hard work and commitment in the lead up to the carnival proved decisive with a comprehensive win over the South Coast team in the final.

In 2026 the College consistently delivered some wonderful rugby memories through our social media pages. From the smallest bumblebees in Year 5 through to the biggest bumblebees in Year 12, all of it was captured in wonderful colour.
