Year 5 & 6 LOTE – Exploring Chinese Ceramics

This term, Year 5 and 6 students embarked on an exciting journey into Chinese ceramics. We began by learning about ancient pottery, traveling back thousands of years to see how it was made using simple, traditional methods. Students even used clay to model the process themselves, bringing history to life.

Next, we explored porcelain and the famous blue-and-white designs, taking a virtual trip to Jingdezhen, the heart of Chinese porcelain culture. Students then participated in a hands-on cultural immersion activity, where they not only created their own vases and plates but also learned about the cultural meaning behind different patterns and designs. Throughout the project, they practiced using Chinese adjectives to describe their work, deepening both their language and cultural understanding.

To conclude the term, students wrote museum-style descriptions of their creations, explaining their designs and reflecting on what they had learned. This allowed them to review the term in a creative and meaningful way, connecting language, art, and culture.

It has been wonderful to see students so engaged and proud of their work. Their creations reflect not only their artistic skills but also their growing understanding of Chinese culture.
