Ged Kearny Scholars
Riley Richards Cohort 2029, Acacia House
The Ged Kearny Scholars are an engaging and insightful group of young women in grades 7-12 who have been given an amazing opportunity, a non-profit scholarship, to be mentored in leadership skills by federal MP Ged Kearny. This semester has been a fantastic one for the Ged Kearney Scholars, in which we held our annual International Women’s Day event to great success. We handed out ribbons around the school, had a colouring competition and created a timeline to be featured in the library, which educated those on the incredible journey of women’s rights and suffrage. We also have some exciting events planned for the rest of this term, including a week-long netball clinic in coordination with state netball player Iris Bentley, aimed at encouraging further participation in girls' sport, which will culminate with our annual Girls' Sports Week in Term 3. We also plan to meet with our mentor, Ged Kearney, to further discuss both women’s health and ways we can encourage female participation in sport across our community.
Green Team
Ava O'Brien Cohort 2028, Tawny House
This term, the Green Team have been busy brainstorming about how we can include more Indigenous plants in the gardens around our school, and planning for a ‘Plastic Free Term 3’, thinking about the ways that Preston High school creates rubbish, and how we can reduce those amounts. This expands on the concept of ‘Plastic Free July’, an annual campaign that encourages participants to cut down on single-use plastics throughout the month of July. The challenge has grown into a worldwide movement, with over 100 million participants in 190 countries.
After observing the rubbish around our school, we have concluded that the three most common types of litter we produce is glad wrap, plastic bottles, and food packets. We encourage parents and students to purchase reusable water bottles and lunch containers, to not only save money in the long run, but reduce the pollution around our school.
On behalf of the Green Team, we hope everyone in our school community will join us in our efforts to make Preston High School a more sustainable environment. We wish everyone a fun and safe term holiday.
